World Premiere of Mohandas at Osian’s-Cinefan
NEW DELHI, 18 July: The world premiere of Mohandas at the 10 Osian’s-Cinefan Festival was followed by a press meet addressed by Director Mazhar Kamran, Producer Abha Sonakia, Actors Sushant Singh, Nakul Vaid, Sharbani Mukherjee and Uttam Haldar. Sushant commented “We are living in good times. At this point, you can experiment with the content and the presentation styles in Indian Cinema. This is probably an era where we are watching history being made. Everything is acceptable and the audience is ready to watch films on diverse subjects.”"th
‘‘Mohandas’ is the story of a man whose identity is stolen and who struggles to prove himself along with the help of a television reporter from New Delhi. Based on the eponymous novel by Uday Prakash, the film is in the backdrop of the coal mines of Madhya Pradesh, and explores the corrupted tapestry of Contemporary India.
Mazhar Kamran, who makes his directorial debut with Mohandas, has previously worked as a cinematographer on movies like ‘Satya’, ‘Kaun”, ‘Masti’ and ‘Jhankaar Beats’. He said “a film is always a director’s baby. The rest of the people are nothing more than contributors or helpers in the process.”
Sharbani, who made her debut back with Border (1997) plays the role of Kasturi, “My character, Kasturi, symbolizes the strength of rural Indian woman - blunt and matter of fact,” she said talking about her role in the movie. The storyline tries to explore the ideals of Gandhi in a symbolic way. Thus, the names are also symbolic - Mohandas and Kasturi for Kasturba. A recurrent question posed to the team was about the unusual name of the film. Kamran agreed that the film is a way of extending Gandhi’s ideals and how the name also represents and evokes the nation at large. He felt no other name could have worked for this film.
Nakul Vaid, a popular face on television who has made it big in films with films like Ab Tak 56 and Yatra has played the leading role in the film.
“”The story was inspiring enough for me to decide that I needed to make this into a film. Issues like commercial viability are important and it is my responsibility to ensure that such a good story is made commercially viable,” said the producer Abha Sonakia.
