Why OSO Works And Saawariya Doesn’t?

Why OSO Works And Saawariya Doesn’t?
Why OSO Works And Saawariya Doesn’t?
The two films represent two different genres. Where OSO belongs to the masala category. Saanwariya belongs to a peculiar Bhansali school of cinema. Bhansali’s film is opulent but so is OSO. Then why does OSO strike a chord and Saanwariya doesn’t.

After a lot of thought I came upon a simple conclusion. Farah has worked very hard on her film and sorry to say this but Bhansali has been purely indulgent and lazy.

OSO has its flaws in the form of an unbelievable plot but the actors look so convinced with it that it doesn’t look like a joke. On the other hand Saanwariya could have been so believable with a simple love story in director’s hand but his sense of direction seems to be so twisted here that actors in the film are like puppets but not characters.

Oh, c’mon anyone can see OSO looks like a team effort. Here is a woman who trusts her team. And here is man who wants to direct, write lyrics and do costumes also…by the way he has composed one of the songs also apparently.

Farah has taken her spoof act very seriously. One would lightly claim that she had a readymade Karz to imitate…but she didn’t. She maintains a delicate balance of giving a tribute to the film and allows her screenplay to be different. Karz was a masterpiece and OSO is only giving a tribute to that film, it may be inspired but surely isn’t a copy.

((P.S: Many of my age would have seen young Chintu Kapoor only on TV. I saw him the first time on large screen, thanks to OSO…man wasn’t he delectable?))

The scenes where Deepika romances the yesteryear heroes is amazing. One would think the animation or grpahic guys did it so what’s the big deal. It is a big deal because Farah thought about it.

Its sheer hard work on the screenplay that although OSO is Shahrukh’s film, by no means a Kirron Kher, a Shreyas Talpade, a Deepika Padukone or even the man who plays Sharukh’s father are done injustice. Shreyas is no side kick. He’s a true friend. And his dialogues and his presence are completely justified not just by length of the role but also his character sketch. Even accomodating 31 stars in a song without demeaning anyone is no mean task.

On the other hand Saawariya had just two debutants and yet in many places it only and only looked like Ranbir’s launch vehicle.

How could we even compare Sonam with Deepika. Deepika in OSO has been given so much to do…again not just by way of length but so many varied expressions, costumes…her presence is so pleasant both as Shantipriya and Sandy.

Sonam is reduced in her film to be just one hanger who has to carry around some really heavy costumes across frames.

Bhansali had Salman at his disposal and all he made him do was carry some strange looking bag.

Bhansali’s film left much to imagination. It was like a grandmother telling a story and the child would have to rely much on his own imagination.

Even after writing all this I feel…you cannot write off Bhansali because the man is a good technician and he must realise like too many cooks spoil the broth, similarly one cook trying to cook too many dishes leaves one burnt and the other half cooked.

    1. Smriti,
I’ve not seen Saawariya, have seen OSO. I still wonder how such a movie could ever work? I still doubt, if it’s a super hit? I watched it on Diwali, the day it got released, got second row from the front, only to realise later that half the auditorium was empty.
What a disaster, two high pitched, high budget films are so dissatisfying..
Probably big budgets, hyped films are like that only

    2. Bhansali is trying to be a Ray? Might be. Then I should say his choice of topic and cast doesn’t go with that temeperament.

    3. Smrti,
I totally agree with you on OSO although I havent watched Saawariya. I quite enjoyed OSOS for its fun element which is why it is a movie to not be taken seriously

    4. First of all your totally wrong Saawariya is way,way much better. And all you sore losers who wrote i love OSO well YOU HAVEN”T EVEN SEEN SAAWARIYA! By the way, whoever wrote this spelled Saawariya wrong so that tells you how much they know, ha? OSO is an old hippie flick and sounds stupid! Saawariya rules, Sonam rules, Ranbir rules, Sanjay Leela Bhansali rules, and that is that. And if you love Deepika Padukone so much why is she going out with the Saawariya guy, ha? I’ll tell you why it’s because she sucks and she has no life, she’s been dating 3 guys in the same year! Probably Deepika gave Ranbir a threat that she would kill Sonam if Ranbir didn’t go out with her! POOR RANBIR! DEEPIKA PADUKONE SUCKS!!!!!
That’s all, and yeah guy’s think before you write!
