The Last Lear: Counter Review

I’m thoroughly disappointed with The Last Lear which I waited for this long.

The story about an ageing theatre veteran doesn’t strike a chord. For no fault of Amitabh Bacchan really, I just could not relate to his eccentrities. Am I supposed to like him only because he can mouth lines from Shakespeare without making any pronunciation mistakes or just because he’s been given a look roughly similar to Muzzaffar Ali or because he has a comparitively better character sketch than anyone else in the film?

Rituparno Ghosh’s The Last Lear opens little misleadingly. First of all, one needs some time to come to terms with English speaking Bengali characters in a traditional Calcutta milieu. Artificial! was my first reaction, “literal translation” said the gentleman sitting next to me.

However, without paying heed to our impromptu remarks the director gets down to business
