The Metrosexual Audience: Happy and Gay! story
There are innumerable instances when heroes have shared a room and a bed (Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan even shared a bathroom in Silsila) and nobody complained. It's probably because Indian cinema through male bonding films has thrived on passive homosexuality where the friend is always more important than the woman in the hero's life.
When Karan Johar portrayed physical intimacy between his lead actors in Kal Ho Na Ho he was taking a risk of offending his audience. But the resounding laughter in the auditorium every time Kantaben appeared on screen proved that the audience had come of age.
Today filmmakers are unhesitant to address the issue of homosexuality and the audience is non judgemental. They empathised with Sanjay Suri in My Brother Nikhil, sympathised with Konkana Sen in Madhur Bhandarkar's Page 3 and Anurag Basu's Metro and ticked off Amitabh Bachchan when he was discerning of a gay colleague in Last Lear.
The references have come to stay and from what appear in the promos of Dharma Productions' Dostana ( releasing on 14 November) the audience is all set to have a good laugh over Abhishek- John bonding. Shot in Miami, Florida and USA Dostana tells about two friends who pretend to be gay to rent an apartment where the land lady wants to safeguard her attractive niece from men.
It's interesting because so far we have only watched films where the hero and the heroine pretend to be a couple in order to share an accommodation like Miss Marry in 1957 or Hungama in 2000. Today however in the age of the metro sexual it would be insensitive to snigger at a pansy Anupam Kher swaggering into the frame singing "Aadmi hoon aadmi se pyaar karta hoon..." Today's motto is to live and let live and Madhur Bhandarkar proves this in his latest film.
Earning Women Don't Marry
In that sense cinema is like fashion where old concepts are repackaged to suit the changing times and there are some stories no matter how many times they are remade over the years, they inevitably guarantee success.
In the ‘˜60s sometime Bengal's Ritwik Ghatak tapped on the conscience of the middle class with his heart wrenching Megha Dhake Taare portraying a family of parasites who exploit Supriya Choudhary, the only earning member in the family. The protagonist puts her life on hold to settle her siblings but at the end of her life journey finds herself isolated.
A recurring motif in the film is the sound of a whipping cane in the background everytime the heroine is betrayed by her dear ones. An immortal scene is when Supriya Choudhary walks down the hospital staircase crestfallen. It is a chilling moment indicative of her crumbling threshold.
A decade later K Balachander addressed the same issue in Aaina (later remade as Laga Chunri Mein Daag) where Mumtaz is forced to take to prostitution to support her poor family. Anil Gangoly projected a tamer version of the same story in Rakhee starrer Tapasya where he justified the elder sister's sacrifice for her siblings in the absence of her parents.
A few years later T Rama Rao gave a fresh perspective to the sob story where the protagonist Rekha refuses to be a martyr in Jeevan Dhara. Her father has abandoned them to become a sanyasi and her elder brother who should have rightfully shouldered responsibility has taken to alchohol. As the sole supporter of the family, Rekha spells terror in the household and emphasizes her rights as the bread earner.
Interestingly all these women have a love life but not all lead to a happy ending. While Supriya Choudhary and Rekha coerce their beloveds to marry their younger sisters in Megha Dhake..and Jeevan Dhara to relieve a part of their responsibility and what's surprising is that they agree... Mukerjee grabs her last chance and tells the truth to Abhishek Bachchan.
It has always worried me why the woman has to endure her responsibilities all alone? Why can't the man she loves accept her with her responsibilities just in the way she accepts him with his commitments? Ye Kaisa Insaaf addressed some of these questions. It stated that a woman does not have to stop feeling responsible for her maiden family just because she is married.
Shabana Azmi continues to provide for her younger brother's education after marriage with Vinod Mehra but not without paying penalty. She is asked to abort her baby time and again by her husband because the household budget does not permit additional expenditure.
Parikshit Sahni in Tapaya was the only man of substance who waited for Rakhee over a decace to settle her siblings before they could begin a life together in their autumn years. Now it seems Rajshri Productions forthcoming Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi directed by Kaushik Ghatak is once again about marriage by virtue than vows. Isha Khopikar's partner Sonu Sood silently stands by his beloved until she honors her commitments and they can dream of a life together.
