The Blue Umbrella Blues review
If you haven't seen Vishal Bhardwaj's The Blue Umbrella you have not really missed much besides the beautiful blue sky and the snow capped mountains of Himachal, writes Kay
The worst gift that I have ever given anyone includes a VCD of The Blue Umbrella. I chose this film because everyone around me was raving about it. And coming from Vishal Bharadwaj stable I presumed it would be good if not the best. I was very disappointed when I saw the movie. The film was extremely slow and each scene went on and on killing the interest of the viewer. The scene where Biniya (protagonist of the film)found the umbrella was so long and descriptive that I really wanted to press the fast forward button on my remote .
I can understand the excitement when a child discovers something so beautiful that everybody in the village envies her. But the entire plot of the film was not at all convincing. Instead of capturing the reactions of Biniya's friends the director only focused on the reactions of adults in the village. Tell me how can a kid not be thrilled about a pretty blue umbrella while rest of the village is going mad about it !!!
The only part I somewhat liked in the film was when Nandu(Pankaj Kapoor)was ostracized by the society when the villagers found out that he stole Biniya’s umbrella. Undoubtedly Pankaj Kapoor is one of the most versatile actors of Bollywood and he has acted well in this film.
However, from single words here and there I couldn’t understand most of his dialogues. And mind you it’s not that I don’t understand the language used in Himachal. The only question I want to ask the director is why did he stick to pure Himachali dialect for him when everyone else in the film was happily talking in Hindi. I had to strain my ears to listen to what he said and no matter how interesting was the character he portrayed, he lost my attention midway . So believe me if you haven't seen the film you have not really missed much besides the beautiful blue sky and the snow capped mountains of Himachal.

I wish this film had subtitles, hardly followed a word or two what Pankaj Kapoor spoke, he's a brilliant actor but needs to come down to poor audiences level.
Good observation, why he was the only one speaking this difficult and funny sounding dialect in the village??!!!
the film had too many song and dance sequences.
The poor girl!!! never felt anything for her throughout the film..
I think Shakespeare suits you better Vishal!!!
I agree that movie was slow. The only
I agree that movie was slow. The only best thing in the movie was the dialogues and acting by Pankaj Kapoor.
