Singh Is Kinng: Stupid But Funny review
Devang Ghia reviews Singh is Kinng
Over the past few years, Akshay Kumar has been banking on his goofiness, delivering hit after hit, sometimes single-handedly, sometimes with a little bit of help from Paresh Rawal. But never has been supported so well by almost the entire cast. Om Puri, Neha Dhupia, Javed Jaffrey, Ranvir Sheorey, Yashpal Sharma, Sonu Sood, Manoj Pahwa, are all actors of calibers ranging from medium to high. So it's possible to argue that they have been wasted in supporting roles. But even in their brief roles, they make a strong impact, making this not just an Akshay Kumar film.
Though of course, the main draw is Akshay Kumar. We are not yet tired seeing his brand of comedy even though we have seen it ten times before. Once again after Namaste London, we see him playing a rustic Punjabi villager. Tired of him being a bull-in-a-china-shop at every occasion, his fellow villagers trick him into leaving for Australia where a bunch of migrants from their village are running an underworld kingdom. By a twist of fate, he ends up becoming their kingpin, called "King".
There's more to the rather unoriginal plot but revealing any more is a waste of your time and my efforts. At one point the script meaninglessly meanders to Egypt where our heroine is studying criminal law. Now the last time I checked Egypt was known for its Sphinx and pyramids, not varsities. But as a relatively untapped location for a song (or two) the makers seem to have forced it in. There are many more of such inanities but if you sit to nitpick, you might miss a gag or two. Some of them are so subtle it's easy to miss them in the first viewing. Every time the tempo begins to sag, a funny scene comes along keeping you involved.
After Akshay Kumar, its Javed Jaffrey who stands out for his performance. As a half-blind, half-deaf Don and a constant spoof of Dara Singh, he is a riot. He even gets to shake a leg or too. Filmmakers have for long ignored this skill of his. If this was Boogie Woogie, I would first make a wisecrack and then give him a ten. I guess no more proof is required to prove that Katrina Kaif can't act and in all likelihood will never be able too. Neha Dhupia does a better job in a supporting role. Maybe its time to once again let her play the lead and relegate lesser actress to second fiddle.
On the music front, only Labh Janua's "Jee Karda" is the only song that will stay in your short term memory. The rest will be forgotten the moment the end credits start rolling. Speaking of end credits, it has that much-hyped song where Akshay Kumar croons with Snoop Doggy Dog. Sadly they are crooning to an exiting audience who has already had enough of the other songs.
The movie is entirely in a fast developing tongue which we shall call ‘˜listener-friendly Punjabi'. Its not Punjabi the way its spoken in Punjab but a much dumbed down version which, after so many years of songs with "kudis" and "mundas", the average Hindi movie watching audience will understand, lending an authentic touch to a film populated by Sardars.
Singh is Kinng is actually quite a bad movie with a lot of redeeming qualities. It's a film that begs the viewer to leave their brains at home. In fact I recommend that along with bags outside the theatre, even the skulls of patrons should be been checked to ensure that they are empty. Singh provides you the value you pay for your popcorn. Try buying an additional burger and you'll repent it.

I agree with you Devang.about some
I agree with you Devang.about some items such as on Egypt. However, there was another major one that was outstanding and that was the fact that "Happy" was not able to understand or speak any English and yet he is able to understand what is being said to him in English when he is in Australia and he can say words such as "shut up." Also, I thought that Javed Jaffrey's style of speaking was better in "Salaam Namastey" than in this one - i felt that he was using the same in this movie.
I can't understand why such
I can't understand why such terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible movies end up becoming blockbusters??? I feel that such movies are sheer torture. Do movies only run on hype and 'star' value? Bazmee's previous film 'Welcome' was also a piece of crap!!! but went on to become a huge hit :(
My question is that why are Indian audiences expected to watch movies after leaving their brains at home?? Why do film makers insult the intelligence of the audience?
Devang, I am puting in a point on the
Devang, I am puting in a point on the "Discussion" Forum about this movie, on the website here, if you don't mind as I think that what IB has actually mentioned is a point that can be discussed.
Hi Pratik, like i said...logic and grey
Hi Pratik, like i said...logic and grey cells to be left at home. Sit to nit pik and its cud end up being one of the worst movies of the year.
Another point tho' 'Salaam Namastey' was a take off of Feroz Khan, this one is Dara Singh. Wont be surprised to see a director repeat this, altering just the actor. After all it has worked twice and Javed J does do impressions quite well.
And yeah, u r right, all other generalisations shud b taken to the Discussion Forum.
I had alot of expectations from this
I had alot of expectations from this film, but unfortunately it was worse than tashan, atleast tashan had some funny moments ..but i failed to find anything funny in this movie .. Akshay looked ridiculous acting like a 5 yr old in his intro scene .. i really hoped they could have made Akki's role more stronger.. not all sikhs who were turbans are look alikes of santa banta .. plzzzzzzzzzz give us a break!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... And i dont understand one thing .. what does 'senseless comedy' means??? ... A waste of time ..really!!!
Hmmmm, let me hazard a definition. A
Hmmmm, let me hazard a definition. A 'senseless comedy' is that which makes u laugh but after the laughter has subsided, you cant help but feel embarrassed that your standards have stooped so low.
Chikz, when I came out of the cinema
Chikz, when I came out of the cinema after watching "Tashan", I had to take some strong pain killers to get rid off my headache. Yes I did enjoy this but unfortunately, I found it very hard to miss the flaws and on some occassions, I felt that they were jumping out of the screen and coming directly at me.
Very nicely written review! The movie
Very nicely written review! The movie is bad. But in a lazy day I willn't mind watching this mindless comedy! I am already missing Govinda, the King of Stupid comedy.
For pure entertainment purpose, I don't want to disturb my brain with serious issues. It looks like this film will serve that purpose.
No comment on Katrina Kaif. I wonder if Indian movie Industry has seen an actress like her before!!!
I strongly feel that at times Akhsay Kumar is over confident, or because he is doing so many movies he is forgetting about detailing. He can act better, he should concentrate on that.
Yes, Akshay Kumar does get carried away
Yes, Akshay Kumar does get carried away sometimes. But as long as he keeps the cash registers ringing, the real Akshay ain't gonna stand up.
