"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" to premiere at San Sebastian news
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, directed by Mark Herman and based on a novel by John Boyne, will have its international premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival out of competition.
The San Sebastian Film Festival and Buenavista / Disney has clarified today that the film will be presented as part of the Official Selection, but not in competition, as previously reported by some media.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a joint production between the United Kingdom and the United States, directed by Mark Herman, whose previous films include Brassed Off (1996), Little Voice (1998), Purely Belter (2000) and Hope Springs (2003). The film was produced for Miramax by David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter saga. The screenplay was written by the novel’ s author, John Boyne, together with director Mark Herman.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is based on a 2006 novel by Irish writer John Boyne, one of the major best-sellers in recent years. More than three million copies have already been sold and the book has been translated into 30 languages.
The film stars David Thewlis, Vera Farmiga, Rupert Friend and Asa Butterfield (as the little boy). It tells the gripping story of a friendship between two boys who live on either side of the fence at a concentration camp. Set in 1942 Berlin, nine-year-old Bruno (Asa Butterfield) knows nothing about the meaning of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is totally unaware of the terrible cruelty his country is inflicting on the people of Europe. All he knows is that his father (David Thewlis) has been promoted and the family sent from a comfortable house in Berlin to an isolated area where there’ s not much to do and nobody to play with. But everything changes when he meets Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the fence, where everyone wears the same ‘˜ striped pyjamas’ uniform. The friendship between Bruno and Shmuel will mark the end of their childhood innocence.
The crew from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas will be in San Sebastian for the film's international premiere, following the film’ s local London and Dublin premieres.

To mark correction, Bruno was 8 in the film. Bruno had a good life and then moved away and then happened to try and look for Shmuel's papa and then tragicly got gassed! It was a sad film and as it is like, nothing to the book. The book had more information and to say, you have to read the book before you see the film, or even see the film before you see the book! I'll be buying it on DVD, that's for sure. And as stunning it is to have Shmuel's (Jack Scanlon's) second name the same as mine. I was over the moon when I saw it and it was quite a coinsidince, because this book was one of my favourite's by far!
