Saas Bahu Aur Non-Sense-Sex

Yasser Usman recounts the torture he went through watching Shona Urvashi’s Saas Bahu aur Sensex

Saas Bahu aur Sensex [2008]
Saas Bahu aur Sensex [2008]
Saas Bahu aur Sensex!!! The name itself was confusing. So with this little confusion I entered the special press preview of the film. The little confusion aggravated with every dialogue…every scene…And when the lights went on during the intermission, I could see ‘irritation’ and ‘boredom’ written all over the faces of the 150 odd people sitting around me. Saas, Bahu and Non-sense-sex (without sex) is simply awful.

Okay……the story…story? Anyways…

Vinita Sen (Kiron Kher- the SEN in SEN-SEX) has come to Mumbai with her daughter Nitya (Tanushree) to begin a new life after her divorce. She becomes friends with the kitty party-group of her building. This is a group comprises of clichéd characters like a Tamil housewife, Punjabi lady with the surname BRAR (the last R not withstanding), Maharashtrian, Muslim, Sindhi and Bengali housewives. It’s evident that  the director intended to show this Mumbai building as a representation of the modern age urban middle class India.

Cliched……hackneyed…done to death…there seems to be a competition going on to show which character is more intolerable.

These characters watch serials like “Saas Bhi Kabhi Kanya Thi,” gossip and whenever they get some time from these important tasks they also invest their money in the stock market with the help of a Parsi stock broker Farooque Sheikh ( as delightful as ever but completely confused in this half-baked role).

There is also a sub-plot involving a hero (Ankur Khanna), who doesn’t look like a hero, a heroine (Tanushree) who doesn’t look like a heroine and Masumeh Makhija (The SEX part of the SEN-SEX) who is either a “side-heroine” or a villain but its not explained clearly. All three seem confused, so is the director and so are the poor audiences.

The only good thing about this Nonsense is the chemistry between Kirron Kher and Farooque Sheikh. You can see the warmth they exude even in these ill-written roles. This was supposed to be the comeback for Farooque Sheikh, I must say he can do much better. Kirron Kher is good. The supporting cast is nothing to write about.

This confusing account is directed by Shona Urvashi who earlier directed a film called Chupke Se. It’s an “original” screenplay written by her. After watching Saas Bahu Aur Sensex the only feeling is we should stick to “inspired” scripts and screenplays. At least we’ll not have to undergo tortures like this.

Incidentally, this film is the debut venture of Hollywood’s Warner Brothers. I’m sure they must be regretting their decision. So if you are thinking of watching Saas Bahu aur  Sensex, don’t forget to take a strip of Disprin…It might help.

    1. 5 days a week I work like a dog and get a headache anyways. I have no intentions of compunding my agonies by watching such moronic efforts. No need for a dispirin. And thanks for the timely warning Yaseer!

    2. Yaseer, usually I agree with your reviews, but this time you are so off mark I am shocked… I loved Saas Bahu and sensex… very funny witty only wish the end was a little more romantic… and the spoof on the TV show is awesome (I am an avid serial watcher and trust me it is very funny)… Aniruddha don’t miss this one its a sweet film at least it tries something different, full marks for that!

    3. Rachna I completely agree that the idea of a group of ’saas-bahu’ watching females with the background of sensex was nice but the implementation was too confusing. I felt the spoof on the TV show was cliched, forced and tasteless. I actually saw people walking out of the theatre when I was watching the film. And I got to know that though people came for the first two days due to Producer’s ( Warner Brother’s) fierce promotion of the film but after the first two days, the shows had to be cancelled due to very few or no audiences. The message was clear- audience felt cheated…I really did… But then its about perception…U liked the film
