Singh is THE King
Yasser Usman reviews Anees Bazmee’s Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif starrer Singh is KinngMindless…but deliciously mindless…
Nonsense… but it never fails to make you laugh dil se…and if you are laughing whole-heartedly, why the hell do you want to make sense.
Just laugh…The real KING of bollywood has arrived.
The underrated Anees Bazmee has done it again. Singh Is Kinng has ‘blockbuster’ written all over it…every frame, every scene, every song, and every dialogue.
It’s a difficult job to review good films, yet I’ll try
So the Story -
Singh is Kinng (ya with a double ‘n’ for extra luck) opens with Lucky Singh (Sonu Sood) who is a Don in Australia and is known as the “king.” And believe me this is the most amusing underworld gang ever depicted in cinema . An “all-sardar” gang with well-etched characters. Lucky Singh belongs to a village in Punjab where his parents and fellow villagers are embarrassed by his criminal activities. Enters Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar), who is a loveable buffoon from the same village. He is an emotional guy and cannot see anyone unhappy. So he decides to bring the King back to the village. In this trip to Australia, he is accompanied by his friend Rangeela(Om Puri). But instead of Australia they reach Egypt (How and Why? Please watch the film).
Finally, they all reach the Gold Coast of Australia. Here, Sonu Sood is attacked by his enemies and is paralysed (again the most funny paralysis ever depicted). Since Akshay saves his life, he is chosen as the next king till Sonu Sood gets well. How Akshay manages the activities of the gang and transforms them completely forms the crux of Singh is King. He gives a totally new meaning to the word ‘King’ as someone who rule the hearts.
And Akshay not only rule the hearts of the hilarious but dangerous gang members but also the audiences. His screen presence, his comic timing, his emotional histrionics, his dance and the action sequences are mind blowing. He just weaves his magic and hypnotize you for good 2 ½ hours.
And the credit goes to Anees Buzmee. I fail to understand that even after consistent success stories ( Pyaar to hona hi Tha, No Entry, Welcome) why is he not in the league of a Karan Johar , David Dhawan or even Farah Khan? It’s high time he gets his due. He has written a very entertaining screenplay for a wafer-thin storyline and each character is so crazy that you are just can’t stop smiling. The film is pacy and you don’t get time to think and that’s the TRP of Singh is Kinng. The director should also be credited for giving the first ‘Sikh’ Protagonist to mainstream cinema. And what a Hero!!!!
Singh Is Kinng has not only given a new King to Bollywood but also a new Queen. Katrina Kaif looks mind-bogglingly beautiful. Her screen presence and the infectious chemistry with Akshay just drips from every scene. Watch out the song in the pyramids of Egypt (Teri ore…).
The film is very well-cast and the bunch of seasoned performers makes it really special. Om Puri is fabulous after so long, Yashpal Sharma, as the permanently udaas gangster is fantastic, Kirron Kher is warm as usual, Jaaved Jaafery is another actor whose performances are shouting from the rooftop to use him more in the mainstream cinema. Neha Dhupia looks hot and for a change acts well in a small role. However, Ranvir Shorey is wasted for the simple reason that his was the weakest role and anyone could have fitted in it.
Pritam’s music is already a blockbuster and though the songs are not great they go well with the mood of the film. Pritam’s dream run continues…
This film will also be remembered for the excellent costumes ever designed for a Sikh man - designer sherwanis/suits, jacket with Capris and the wonderful turbans.
Watch the magic of the new king…the king kumar J

Aren’t you kidding that you liked the film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isn’t it preposterous, reckless, idiotic and anything that anybody with any grey cell would hate?????????????????
Enjoyable but it did have some major flaws, which I think that Anees Bazmee failed to rectify.
Your site gave “Aamir” a so-so review and gives Singh is King a glowing one….talk about confused desis….
Puzzled, it’s called “subjectivity”. Especially when two different people write about two different films, comparing their “stars”…I think it’s as goood as comparing apples and oranges.
But, if you’re convinced about the “critical appeal” of Singh is King. You should read this new item:
