Khoya Khoya Chand is the disappointment of the week. A film purportedly on the golden era of Bollywood that only glitters in the promos but the magic remains elusive from the silver screen. It’s a disappointment all the more because it lacks both, a sound screenplay and the directorial grip on storytelling. You can watch Khoya Khoya Chand to feel the power of direction and screenplay (because the film lacks them both), but expecting a masterpiece could be disheartening. writes Bikas Mishra
Khoya Khoya Chand attempts to narrate the tragic love story of a script writer Zafar (Shiney) and his muse-Nikhat (Soha), a supporting actress who makes it big in the industry. However as luck would have it while Zafar becomes a celebrated director, Nikhat disintegrates into an alcoholic.
The film lacks everything that Sudhir Mishra is known for. It’s week on direction and screenplay. Good actors like Vinay Pathak and Rajat Kapoor perform well. However others, like Soha for example, despite a visible effort, can’t live up to the grand characters. While Ahuja makes it a point to cry out loud that he belongs to theatre.
Like Sudhir Mishra’s earlier film, Khoya Khoya Chand tries to recreate an era and make a comment on it. However unlike Hazaron Khwahishein here he narrates the happenings without taking us to the era. A story that turns out to be a bundle of happenings without a soul. An ambitious film that’s low on cinema.
The film at times also looks self obsessed. The director even acknowledges it on screen: Zafar (Shiney Ahuja) the scriptwriter tries his hands at direction and ends up making a film based on his own story. Though this film almost finished his career in the “industry”, he reappears after a while only to make another film on his muse’s story. Though we only keep guessing what fires Sudhir’s inspirations!
I don’t see any problem with the plot, like Mishra’s earlier film it’s all about relationships. Relationships, which are hard to fit into conventions. However what Khoya lacks is the kind of sublimity that Sudhir achieved in Hazaron Khwahishein. Here it’s hard for a viewer to feel for any character because they don’t come out as made of flesh and blood. They look like puppets in the hands of the director who perform between “action” and “cut”. (not meant to be a praise).
You can watch the film to feel the power of direction and screenplay (because Khoya Khoya Chand lacks them both), but expecting a masterpiece could be disheartening. Hope Sudhir makes a better film next time.
