Ingmar Bergman
Fans of the late Ingmar Bergman will now get a chance to view a selection of seven of the master’s works in a Bergman retrospective, titled “Remembering Bergman” spanning 6 cities in India, marking the first anniversary of the renowned director’s demise.

Bergman is best known for such unforgettable classics like Wild Strawberries, Through a Glass Darkly (which won the best foreign film Oscar in 1961), The Seventh Seal and Fanny and Alexander. All these movies were meditations on life, death and the meaning of our existence.

Viewers will be able to experience some of these films in the upcoming festival. Wild Strawberries which was arguably Bergman’s most personal film, and one of his greatest successes, tells the story of an elderly Swedish professor, who while traveling to receive an award encounters memories, both guilt ridden and nostalgic, from his past and is forced to come to terms with his own imperfections.

Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light and The Silence form Bergman’s celebrated “Silence of God” trilogy which deals with man’s actions in the face of a silent or absent creator. But Bergman also had a lighter streak, often overlooked due to the gravity of his better known works. The Devil’s Eye, which is a fable about Don Juan’s attempts to seduce a beautiful virgin, is a fine example of Bergman’s wry wit. Summer Interlude, which portrays a ballerina reflecting back on her life’s myriad achievements and failures, and the acclaimed romance Summer with Monika, round up the list. The festival begins on the 8th of August at Delhi where it will run for a week. Thereafter it will be screened at Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and conclude in Mumbai in the week ending 18th September.

The films would be screened in the following order: Wild Strawberries, Summer Interlude, Through A Glass Darkly, Winter Light, The Silence, Summer With Monika, The Devil’s Eye. The festival is hosted by the Swedish Embassy in collaboration with Palador Pictures.
