Our Awards, Their Awards story
It is that time of the year when television is over flowing with award functions. Soon we shall be watching the king of all award functions, the Oscar ceremony.
Every time I watch the Oscars I ask myself what is it that they always get it right while we don't. It is not as if our functions back home exhibit any lack of competence. Our basic problem is in the infrastructure. Besides that there are other factors like limited budget but most important, our films cater to a cross-section of language, region and culture. Still we manage to put up an event as glamorous and entertaining as them even though some of us are just a few years old in the business.
In defence of the award shows I will say it's a daunting task to put up an event of this magnitude without the backing of an Academy the way they do. I agree there is a lot of room for improvement and to begin with, we can aspire to be more original. At the moment every award show is a poor copy of their event. That can only happen if the viewers, the film fraternity, the organisers and most important, the sponsors and television channels will change their mindset.
Our stars will want to attend the event only if they are winning. Hollywood on the surface at least copes with failure better than our heroes. They are more sporting or at least they pretend to be.
There, the guests arrive on time and the auditorium gates are shut once the show begins. Here, the event being outdoors, stars arrive fashionably late and though it's a struggle putting up seats for latecomers somehow nobody feels embarrassed.
There, all nominees, technicians and stars are meted out equal treatment. Here, because the event is primarily a television show, the emphasis is on the stars. There, the presenters attend rehearsals to time their entries and exits. Here, most of the time the presenters are clueless about whom they are honouring and for which category. And in those rare cases that they do, they openly voice their personal preference.
There, the presenters are assigned aisle seats to facilitate movement towards stage. Here, no matter where you place them, they choose their own seating and company. There, seating arrangement is a protocol. Here, it is a hierarchy.
There, lead stars feel privileged to present technical awards. Here, superstars are reserved for the popular segment to add sparkle. There, the trophy dominates the backdrop. Here, the sponsors hog the limelight. There, the show is organised by the Academy and therefore sacrosanct. Here, media houses play hosts and therefore the event becomes controversial.
There, the potential winners work diligently on their acceptance speeches. Besides acknowledging the crew and the family they feel committed to deliver social messages. Here, with so many award functions and the same list of winners making rounds, the speeches become boring and repetitive.
There, if two names share the credit, two trophies are presented on stage. Here it is one trophy, one microphone, one speech and usually only one person gets to take the award home.
There, they give little focus to foreign nominees (not a glimpse of Shekhar Kapur, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowarikar, thank God we got to see Anil Kapoor dance). Here, we gloat over the foreigners like deities.
There, the last two important awards are for the Film and for the Director. Here, it is for the Actor and the Actress otherwise the guests will not wait till the end. There, the invitees attend with an escort. Here, they come with their entire families, friends and sometimes, even neighbour.

As in most of your posts, this one too, is an interesting one. However, I disagree with you on us not having infrastructure. India has enough money to make ridiculously expensive lullabies, don't know how else to refer to these boring celluloid sagas. It's not about having the coolest technology, but about making sincere films. Slumdog Millionaire was made in $15mn. The annoying Devdas was made in about $13mn, not too far off. The lovely sets and lavish costumes of Devdas were world class in terms of quality and glamour quotient. The point is not the lack of infrastructure but what you decide to do with that infrastructure/money.
The issue is that producers here aren't bold enough to think out of the box. Once, they allocate at least a considerable portion of their business towards "good" cinema, a market will form, slowly but surely. And stars too, could slowly seep in. Right now, in Hollywood you have stars balancing regular Hollywood masala films with a bunch of thinking films. E.g. Angelina Jolie doing Changeling. Once producers open their minds, there is a possibility that stars too, could get a reality check and perhaps become more professional.

One thing I noticed that not many mentioned Bhanu Athiya's name as being the first Indian to win an Oscar for "Best Costume" for Sir Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" in 1982 - twenty seven years ago and yet she's worked with so many Bollywood directors, including Ashutosh Gowarikar and if I am not mistaken she's one of the judges.
