press-conf-chalo-lets-go-anjan-dutt_006.jpgNEW DELHI, 18 July: Anjan Dutt, who is a well known musician, actor, lyricist and filmmaker, says he wants to make films that would help shed the Bengali stereotype that is predominantly seen in most Bengali films.

Addressing the press meet after the film Chalo Let’s go screened at the ongoing Osian’s-Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, he said his attempt was to reach Bengali audiences all over the country and convey the message that Bangla cinema does not necessarily begin and end at Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen, the greatest stalwarts of Bengali cinema.

Certain inhibitions had prevented a move away from serious cinema and the picture of a changing Bengal was somehow missing.

Asked about the filmmakers who had made a name for themselves, he regretted that they appeared to be working more for festivals and awards rather than reaching out to the viewers.

Asked why he had used an English word for a title of a Bangla film, he said it was meant to be a pun, and also because it would appeal to the present generation. Besides, that is how people in Bengal conversed.

He also wanted to introduce to the audiences through his films the new genres of music that were invading West Bengal. He tried to make his film in the form of a travelogue to show movement. This was in keeping with the great litterateurs of the state who had also written their literature in the form of travelogues.

The press meet was also addressed by Actors Saswata Ghosh, Rudraneel Chatterjee, and music director Neel Dutta.

Anjan Dutta can be regarded as one of the best actors in the Indian parallel cinema movement. A popular artiste of the Bengali film scene, he received the best newcomer award at The Venice Film Festival for the movie Chalachitro directed by Mrinal Sen. But later on, his career diverted towards the world of music.

Chalo lets go is a hilarious road movie featuring four heroes on a crazy, rambling journey in the picturesque North Bengal. Filmed in Calcutta and Darjeeling, it is a roller coaster journey comprising of nine tourists and one hitchhiker.
