Nine Hubert Bals Fund and CineMart titles in Cannes 2009 news
Maintaining its strong presence in Cannes, the International Film Festival Rotterdam has nine films linked to the Hubert Bals Fund and CineMart in Cannes festival sections. From Un Certain Regard, Raya Martin's Independencia and Ciro Guerra's The Wind Journeys both received Bals Fund grants in the script development stage of their films.
Liu Jiayin (China) received a Hubert Bals Fund grant in the digital category for her Oxhide II, now selected for Directors' Fortnight.
Expected to screen at Rotterdam 2010 Oxhide II by Liu Jiayin is a structuralistic and minimalist portrayal of her own family. At the centre of the family existence is her father's butcher shop, now in decline because of the economical changes in mainland China.
In 2005, Raya Martin's Now Showing received a Hubert Bals Fund Award at the Cinemanila Boracay Workshop. The film was presented at Directors' Fortnight 2008. The Bals Fund continued supporting Martin for his subsequent projects A Short Film about the Indio Nacional, premiered in Rotterdam 2006, and Independencia, also a CineMart Project in 2007 and now selected for Un Certain Regard. Raya Martin presents a second film in Cannes: Manila, co-directed with Adolfo Alix Jr. (Special Screenings).
The Rotterdam film festival staff delegation in Cannes is headed by director Rutger Wolfson. In close collaboration with Holland Film, the Dutch Pavilion in the International Village will again feature a Rotterdam section where the city of Rotterdam, the IFFR and the Rotterdam Media Commission join forces for the promotional campaign ‘˜Be Inspired by Rotterdam'. Home of the IFFR, the city of Rotterdam offers ideal opportunities and locations for filmmaking and film production infrastructure.
During Cannes, CineMart Manager Marit van den Elshout and CineMart Coordinator Jacobine van der Vloed will be moderators of the Production Network, part of the Marché du Film 2009.
The 39th International Film Festival Rotterdam takes place from 27 January through to 7 February 2010; within the festival the 27th CineMart takes place January 31-February 3 2010. IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund, the largest of its kind worldwide, provides grants for script development, digital production, post production or distribution to independent filmmakers in developing countries. CineMart is the world's first and largest co-production market for low and medium-budget film projects.
