Student Film Section Inaugurated at 11th MIFF news
In the ongoing 11th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival for Short Films, Documentaries and Animation Films(MIFF), a special section called “Films from Film Schools” was inaugurated on Thursday.
Two short films from ‘Satyajeet Ray film and Television Institute’ were screened, first was Laal Juto (Red Shoes), directed and edited by Shweta Merchant, and second film was Chinese Whispers’ by Raka Datta.
“Every film maker should begin his career with short film and documentary and film institutes are the birth places for grooming, budding talents of India,’ said noted Bollywood film director Subhash Ghai who inaugurated this section of the festival. He also expressed the need to upgrade the quality of short film and documentaries made by students, so that tyhey are of international standards.
Film ‘Laal Juto’ depicts a beautiful relationship between a 15 year old boy Nitish and his neighbour, Gouri. An incident of buying shoes for himself gives a realization about a change in his feeling towards Gouri, Director Shweta has handled the film very softly using red images of a baby Tutul, which sharpens Nitish’s feeling towards Gouri.
Second film ‘Chinese Whispers’ directed by Raka Datta, is a silent comment on the city-life and the alienation that it breeds. The film is about a man and a woman, who are living and adjusting to the situations of urban space. Both start with different problems of their own surroundings, but later on get used to with the situations and problems too.
In this special section of students’ films, altogether 24 films are scheduled to be screened during MIFF. Three Institutes of Films viz. L.V. Prasad Film & TV Academy, Denouncement by Sweta Korde (09 films), National Insitute of Design, New Delhi (07 films), Satyajit Ray, Film & Television Insitute (08 films) have been selected for the festival.
