Call for Entry: Five-week Film Lab in Turkey, Sweden, India

Film Lab – To Explore The Image Of The Other, a five week course will be held from April 2nd – May 3rd, 2013.

The course is programmed for the participants to explore how they portray images of people from other cultures/countries. “Fundamentally, the course is about how you, as a film student, will challenge your own assumptions, ideas and beliefs. You look into your own perspectives and attitudes, how you meet other people from other cultures, and what and why and how you choose to film,” states the official release.

Anyone with Higher Secondary Education and with the ability to speak and write English is eligible to apply. There is no fee but admitted students will need to have their camera and a computer with editing software. However, selected students can ask the Suchitra School of Cinema and Dramatic Arts, Bangalore to borrow a camera during the course period.

The course includes independent studies, exercises and analyzes the concepts of tourism and activism. The course will take place simultaneously in Bangalore and Gothenburg, but two weeks of the course, combining Indian and Swedish students, will be located in Istanbul. Before the trip abroad, the film students will prepare their own audio-visual presentations, read the prescribed literature and write a reflection that is presented to all the other students before departure. After returning home, the students will work independently to do post-production work on their audio-visual materials, and write a reflective essay that will presented to the other students. The course concludes with an account of filmed and written material.

The course schedule includes workshops, lectures, group discussions about given tasks, presentations exercises, individual work and group work in the audio-visual field, group exercises and seminars emphasizing intercultural aspects.

The application should consist of: Completed application form, CV (maximum one A4 page), A short motivation for applying (max. one A4 page), A film of yours, max 10 minutes (link to Vimeo, YouTube or similar or submitted DVD or USB stick), Copy of your last academic qualification certificate, A certified copy of the passport.

The course is jointly organised by the Valand Academy and Centre for Film and Drama’s Suchitra School of Cinema and Dramatic Arts, Bangalore with the support of Region Västra Götaland´s Cultural Committee and the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg.
