Kismat Konnection: Just A Time Pass Movie

Kismat Connection remains just a time pass movie because the comic scenes don’t make you smile …the emotional scenes don’t touch your heart and the characters lack the zaniness one expects from the films of Aziz Mirza, writes Yasser Usman

Kismet Connection (2008)
Kismet Connection (2008)
“Kismat Konnection” was an interesting name to start with. After watching the film, I can undoubtedly say that only Kismat can save this Aziz Mirza film. It fails to make a connection (or Konnection !!!) with the audience who were obviously expecting something better.

The story line is wafer-thin. It’s about a Toronto based architect, Raj Malhotra (Guys think of a fresh name please!!!), a topper throughout his college days but as he passes out his luck deserts him. Whatever he does goes wrong. Frustrated with the course of things, he goes to a weird astrologer weirdly named as Haseena Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla looking horrible). Haseena tells Raj that he needs a lucky charm to change his life for the better. That lucky charm obviously is Vidya Auntie (Ya she looks like an auntie even with the new hair cut and the new wardrobe). Never mind… So Vidya enters his life and good luck comes back. Somewhere in these proceedings Raj falls in love with his good luck charm. But there is a hitch. Vidya has a boyfriend and they are planning to go to Australia after marriage, leaving Raj with his terrible luck. This much story takes the first two hours of the film. The pace of the film is irritatingly slow. The story just doesn’t move forward. The climax of Kismat Konnection is extremely predictable.

It’s a typical Aziz Mirza film, simple characters, simple storyline and predictable situations. The shades of Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and even Lage Raho Munna Bhai are quite obvious. But the film completely falters at the screenplay level. There is nothing new to offer. The chemistry between Shahid and his friend (Vishal) is better then that of Shahid and Vidya. But the main problem is that film leaves little for the audience to guess or imagine.

Shahid Kapoor could’ve selected a better script after the brilliant Jab We Met. Though he is the brightest point in this film but even his histrionics couldn’t do much. He emotes well, dances even better but the final outcome is no where near his very mature performance in Jab We Met. Vidya Balan tries really hard to be the bubbly and vivacious Priya, but she is totally miscast and this is not her fault. May be she should stick to roles like Parineeta. Juhi Chawla is wasted in a bizarre role and so is Boman Irani. Vishal Malhotra who plays Shahid’s friend has got enough screen space and he is good. For reasons best known to him, an actor of the caliber of Om Puri is accepting such obnoxious roles repeatedly. So no comments on his performance.

Music is the saving grace of the film and if the film does well, major credit should go to Pritam who is on a roll these days. The title track and the songs by Aatif Aslam ( Bakhuda tumhi Ho) and Mohit Chauhan (Is This Love) are good and very well shot. Binod Pradhan’s cinematography is first rate and Canada has never looked better.

But Kismat Connection remains just a time pass movie because the scenes don’t make you smile ( its supposed to be a Romantic Comedy)…the emotional scenes don’t touch your heart and the characters lack the zaniness one expects from the films of Aziz Mirza. We definitely expected better. Kismat Konnection definitely needs a good luck charm at the box office.

    1. to each its own….this is your personal opinion.
And KK is a lovely Aziz Mirza movie, and if people get out of the JWM mould maybe they will then see the beauty of this movie. Indian audience is sometimes so daft, unreal!Every actor has done a good job, the only problem is that it should not have been marketed as a rom-com, which threw a few people off.
And Shahid signed this movie before Jab We Met released (everyone knows that), so before posting facts, atleast check them . Kaminey and Ken Ghosh’s movies are the ones he signed after JWM release.
