Borrowing its name from this classic “Aa Gale Lag Ja” number….Abbas Tyrewala’s ( give him some credit yaar, its his baby after all) ‘Jaane Tu ya Jaane Na’ is COOL and REFRESHING.
The story is nothing new, the treatment is. The film is about Jai Singh Rathore a.k.a Rats (Imraan Khan), a non-violent Rajput who and Aditi Mahant a.k.a Meow (Genelia D’Souza), cute and violent at the same time. Aditi feels Jai is fattu (coward). They fight like crazy but just can’t live without each other. Their parents, their friends think they are almost a made for each other couple but they believe they are just great friends. So when do they know it’s love? This is the crux of the story. Doesn’t sound too great!!! but do not go by the simple story. Abbas Tyrewala has weaved beautiful situatins that will just take you back to your college days. Watch it for its simplicity, well etched characters and situations and above all some excellent cameos by Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Suhail Khan!!! Simply brilliant.
Director Abbas Tyrewala has executed the screenplay with brilliance because there was nothing new in the story. It’s just his treatment that makes the difference. The first half is pacy, though the second half tends to drag at times and gets predictable. But there are ample moments that make you smile…like the scene between Amit and Aditi, his confession. Heart warming and brilliant… Aditi begins to realise her love for Jai only when Manjari Phadnis enters the scene. The jealousy, sadness and regret is executed and performed perfectly. The scenes between Jai’s mother (Ratna Pathak Shah) and his dead father talks from a portrait (Naseruddin Shah) are Hilarious! and above all the chemistry between the gang of 6 friends…so believable. The dialogues are witty and brilliant.
The strongest point of Jaane tu…remains the music. You can just salute the genius of A.R. Rehman, just look at his range!!!. “Pappu cant dance saala” “Kabhi Kabhi Aditi” and the title track may not be classics but when you watch the movie, you feel these are the songs these characters could have sung.
Now a little bit about the performances. Imraan Khan makes a very impressive debut. In a tailor-made role not once does he go over the top. A good restrained performance, however it is to be seen if he has got some range. Genelia D’Souza’s simply excels…she oozes confidence that makes her character so believable…It seems so ridiculous that she wasted her talent in some nonsense movies before. Manjari Phadnis looks good, acts well. Ratna Pathak Shah is superb and so is Naseeruddin Shah. Paresh Rawal has got just 3 scenes and you have to see what good actors can do even in smaller roles. A special mention for Arbaaz Khan and Suhail Khan…guys they are just FABULOUS. They make you laugh whenever they appear on screen. The director has managed to extract excellent performances from every other character actor.
Overall, Abbas Tyrewala’s ( not Aamir Khan’s 
) Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is immensely entertaining and very cute. It makes you smile and laugh and some scenes just touch your heart. Bollywood is going to get a much needed HIT…for sure.

It indeed was a cool movie.
This movie is meant for younger generation who would like to dwell in dreams of love, friendship & romance., which is far from reality. Majority of movie is about relationships between various characters. The star cast looks good except the lead character of Jaysingh Rathod played by Imran Khan. He is very stiff in majority of sequences, reminded me of Pradeep kumar & Rajendra kumar of olden days. Aditi is sweet & lovable. The stand out performance is by the old theatrical maestro of real life couple Naseer & Ratna. They are brilliant in the movie. Direction is poor & full of flaws. We could not digest a pakka rajasthani character speaking urdu words too often. The story narration is good but predictable. Story concept is highly influenced by movie like Dil Chahata Hai. Music is based on rhythm & A R Rehman is poor in this movie. All in all, the movie is boring for thinkers & brilliant for morons.
The movie was fantabulous!!!!!….it just rminds u of ur college dayz….itz fun to watch this movie with ur close buddies…The movie relates to u very easily..can be added to your list of “must watch” movie list.Few scenes might bore you in the second hlf but then the movie again gets its charm back..so what you waiting for!! book the tickets and RUSH!!!!!!
The movie was Awesome. U cant take ur eyes off the screen for a single moment.
Though there was nothing new with story but the scene sequences and performances were appreciable.
Over all its a cool movie. The second half is better and well directed. Imran has lot of pottential…

I was expecting something better when Amir Khan’s name was attached. It was a sheer disappointment. One star should be the true rating for this movie.

The younger generation will definitely like the movie… No second thoughts about that…!! The others might have a different opinion… Overall i feel its worth a watch..!! Movie was great!!! I saw it like twice in a two days and it was cool for my taste of movies. I loved Imraan as in Jay and Genelia as in Aditi./… they dont look like they are acting or performing… it just seems like so real. The song Jane tu ya jane na… just came in my mind everytime…and whatever the hell the people will talk about dont loose faith in yourself newcomers…. just do your work and be happy//////

these are the d thoughts that came to mind after watching the movie on friday… thats it.
And ya, i feel its a one-point agenda of entire media n reviewers to pull Harman down…He may not be awesome, but as a newcomer he is average…and so is Imran.Lets wait for atleast 3 releases to judge them…

This film was definitely entertaining and it is most definitely for the younger generation but somehow, I didn’t like it when they sang the song from the 1970’s classic silver jubilee hit, “Aa Gale Lag Jaa.” A.R. Rehman’s music is that of Jazz genre in this film and it was thouroughly enjoyable as was the acting by Naseerudin Shah. Genelia D’Souza played her part very well but as for Imran Khan, I think that he will inmprove and given time and a few more good films he will do just that.
As I have said that it is entertaining but I would not like to watch it again so soon. But it is one of the better films this year and this has definitely broken the spell regarding the flops that going on recently.

I have seen “When Harry Met Sally” quite a few times and also enjoyed that. In fact I have it on the video and DVD.
As a writer, I can say that yes I agree that there’s copying going on in the movie industry But sometimes the story writers do make changes to the story from the original. But ther have been cases where this has not been done and people have faced legal action over it. For example the movie “Partner,” which starred Govinda, Salman Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina. This was a copy of the Hollywood movie, “Hitch” which starred Will Smith. “Hitch” was produced by Will Smith’s company and action was taken against the makers of “Partner.” But with “Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na”, this is not the case as there was another movie previously which had the same basic theme, where again, story telling was how the movie started. The film was “Chalte Chalte,” which starred Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee. No one complained that this was a copy. So why now?
Sumit! I have question for you. Why do you watch Hindi movies if you hate them?
Not all Bollywood movies are copies. For example “Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Laagan and Swades,” just to mention a few.
Sumit you are mentioning that “no 1 in Bollywood has a brain to think something original.” I would not quite say that because the films that I have mentioned above are all original. Infact, if you look at what is happening in Hollywood, then you will notice that some Hollywood companies are turning to India for inspiration.
Sidharth, in my experience as a writer, a lot of writers and even screen writers at times observe real people to try and get a character either for their novel or a movie. And once they have done this, they create a character with amendments being made. So sometimes, the character you may read about or see in a movie, are sometimes but not always, based on what the writers have seen. These actors then portray the characters in the best possible way that they can.

Aamir khan is a nice actor as well as director
refreshingly original treatment to an oft-repeated storyline. noteworthy were the camera work and the way each actor filled into the characterizations. pretty entertaining… both the movie and the review.

I have a feeling that Imran Khan will improve and he will be a very good actor. I had the same feeling about Shah Rukh Khan when I first saw him in “Raju Bangaya Gentleman” all those years back and at the time many thought that I was joking but see where he is now!

The board says “Waiting For Godot”. It is an oblique reference to Samuel Beckett’s classic existentialist play of the same name.
As for the movie, it’s one of the few most enjoyable flicks of this summer. Simple, it doesn’t aspire or masquerade to be anything more than or above a commercial movie. And one that is specially made to be identified with by the ‘younger generation’. Hats off to Abbas Tyrewala. He’s done it again.

I would say that this is not a copied movie but inspired. “When Harry Met Sally” was released in the late 1980’s.

Movie is worth less and time waste. I do not understand what is happening to indian youth people? I thought nowadays they are known for smartest youth in the world but after read above reviews of movies made me disappointment. I think india has a sensless youth genaration in the world.
