NDFC Screenwriters’ Lab 2012: Siddharth Sinha’s “Behind the Camera”

By Nandita Dutta • Published on September 4, 2012

DearCinema profiles the screenwriters who are participating in the NFDC Screenwriters’ Lab from September 1-3 at the ongoing Venice Film Festival.

Screenwriters’ Lab, a 2-part workshop conducted by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) is designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking community. The participants will be mentored by Marten Rabarts, Olivia Stewart, Urmi Juvekar and Bianca Taal.

Siddharth Sinha answers five questions about his project “Behind the Camera”:

Tell us more about your project.

While making a film, three teenage friends come across the questions of love, jealousy and loneliness. The whole confusion takes a toll on them and the film takes a back seat but later the film only brings them back though not necessarily with all questions answered. “Behind the Camera” intends to portray the youth of urban India, their personal crisis and inter personal relationships with a newly found hobby ‘filmmaking’.

At what stage of development is it?

It is still in the writing stage and would be my second film (first I am planning to shoot at this year-end).

Is a director/producer attached with the project? Or do you plan to direct it yourself?

I would be directing it myself, the French film company who is producing my first feature will be also producing this second film.

Tell us about your background.

I completed post graduate diploma in film direction from Film & Television institute of India. My graduation short film with Indian title Udherbun and international title (Un) Ravel has won SILVER BEAR award at 58th Berlin international film festival 2008 and has traveled to several film festivals. The same film won the National Film Award for Best Short fiction Film in India. I was invited for Berlin Talent Campus in 2006. My docu-fiction film Rangbela  premiered at International Documentary Film Festival Amesterdam. I was invited as a jury member to ‘Noor de lijk film festival’ in Netherlands in 2008. I was also invited by European Film Academy for a filmmaker’s workshop ‘A Sunday in the country extended’ in India in 2012. I was appointed as an honorary member in the selection committee at (MAMI) Mumbai film festival 2009,2010 and 2011. A Paris based Film Company is producing my first feature length film ‘Twosome’. The project won the Best co production project award by prestigious Hubert Bals Fund of Rotterdam film festival at India International film festival.
