Interview: Jaideep Varma, Director, Hulla story
Jaideep Varma waited for seven years after writing the script of "Hulla" for this day. He met close to forty producers, nobody read his script, except one to whom Jaideep read it out. Most of them found his idea frivolous. In an industry which is apparently ready to pay any price for an original idea, Jaideep's film hit a dead end twice during its making.
"Hulla" is an urban tale that smells of Mumbai. Based largely on his own experience, Jaideep weaves a story of a stock brokerage firm employee, who spends sleepless nights in a suburban Mumbai housing society thanks to the night guards whistling. A simple story that opens new vistas to the city where people crave for privacy and prosperity and often fail.Â
In a candid conversation with Bikas Mishra, Jaideep Varma shares his experience of making "Hulla" and speaks about dangers of corporatisation of Hindi film industry.Â
Where did you draw the inspiration from?
From Life. I'm really interested in telling stories which are close to life. Stories which are real to me.These stories are drawn from my life and from the lives of people around me.
Unfortunately this doesn't happen in India very frequently because it's the producers who determine what gets made into a film. Most of them are looking for precedents therefore you've DVD rip-offs. And when they're not looking for precedents then they're looking for stars. Money is being spent to pay exorbitant salaries to people who I think don't deserve it. There're certain compromises made for market acceptability.
Originality usually doesn't have a precedent; therefore it's very difficult to test originality. The so called corporatization of industry has made it even worse. Innovation is not the hallmark of corporate world, it's the hallmark of entrepreneurs. I think we need more entrepreneurial way of thinking in our industry rather than corporatization.
Your film smells of Mumbai?
This used to happen in seventies and eighties. Our films had more soul. As a culture we used to interact with ourselves. Our films used to reflect the reality around us. But now it reflects the market around us. It doesn't reflect the life any more.
I'm basically a writer and I've come into filmmaking as a writer. I thoroughly enjoy stories about everyday people. I love reading stories about people around us.
Gangsters, dance floors, stars all these have become necessary to make films now-a-days but that's the easy way out. Certain films get made outside the system and they make us think. I think, Khosla Ka Ghosla was a fluke and see what it has done. But how many such films came after that?
I think the most commercial element in storytelling is humour. Everybody relates to humour. Producers think that it's only slapstick humour that the audience appreciates.
Your film beautifully captures the unique power equation that exists in the housing societies of Mumbai?
Our whole country is like that. These kinds of disparities are there everywhere. That's what makes it interesting.
Did you intend to give out a larger message?
Not really. I was more focused on the two characters and I wanted to tell an engaging story. But this is what happens when you tell a story about real people, real issues do crop up in the narrative. The big themes are inbuilt in the smaller themes. If you try to tell stories of the small things they are invariably connected to bigger things.
Rajat Kapoor plays a lower middle class business man and he manages beautifully to let go of his sophistication to add authenticity to the character.
Pankaj Kapoor was supposed to do the role. Finally Rajat Kapoor did it. It was a learning experience for me to see, how an actor can invest the character with his soul and make it his own. Pankaj Kapoor's "soul" could have been very different. What turned me on was casting against "type" and that was the reason what turned Rajat on.
And he told me that he's closer to this character than the sophisticated characters he plays.
Since you're talking about stereotypes, I think Sushant has been stereotyped as a bad guy, who makes faces. He is a fantastic actor. He's a terrific actor, he's got the fire that you don't see in many actors. What Sushant brought into the film has astonished me. Though there is unevenness in the performances, that's partly because of my inexperience and partly because we had no time for rehearsals.
How did you find the experience of working with newcomer and seasoned actors?
You just get people interested in what you're doing. It's not about back stories. I did provide back stories to the actors who wanted to know about them. What is required is there in the script already. 99% of the actors got it right. My way of doing it was to tell them what they feel. I didn't have to do much and that was a good part of the collaborative process.
I had to do little bit of fine tuning in most cases and to my great surprise, there was no difference between experienced actors and the complete new comers.
I think one good thing that happened is the casting. I think people have been cast correctly. In most cases even when they're not performing correctly, they're just being the character.
Are there many non actors working in the film?
Yes, a couple of them. I think the best example of non actors are the stock brokers, who are in the dealing rooms. They were consultants so that we don't make mistakes in what we were doing. At some point I felt lets have them in the frame and see what happens. My brief to them was - do what they do in a dealing room. It looks more authentic because of that.
Is the dealing room a set?
That is real dealing room. Strangely people see that and say, that looks really small budget but that's how dealing rooms of Mumbai are. I thing that's one of the strong point of the film, since it's shot on real locations, it invariably looks real.
Did you follow the script strictly or actors improvised the lines?
Script was strictly followed but improvisation happened with the actors. Everybody came up with suggestions and many of them I kept. Like the taxi driver in the final scene, the actor came up with his suggestion and that's brilliant.
Working with actors is a huge pleasure and that's one of the reasons I would like to do films. I'm not a improvisational kind of a director, at least at this at time of my career. I need a script. If I've a script at my disposal, my job is to execute that and that turns me on.
How did you find that elderly security guard? Haven't we seen him before?
He is 78 years old and it is his feature film debut. He played the liftman in a famous MTV commercial. He suited the character perfectly but it was difficult for him to learn the lines. But we worked on it. He was the most enthusiastic actor ever. He worked really hard and did a fabulous job. There are some magic moments between him and Sushant. It's bit of a privilege to be able to direct people like him. Again it was a collaborative process. He did research on his own. It was a real pleasure to work with him.
He is a character who we don't take notice of, quite often?
And that's why the film ends with him (to know how, watch the film). I think the lower middle class is invisible beyond servicing our needs.
Your film has people from the entire spectrum of middle class? From a stock broker to a security guard?
That's what will happen if you tell real stories.
Isn't this an irony that your film that tells stories of middle class people is build around a relatively elite idea of "privacy"?
I don't know if it's an elite idea. If privacy is an elite idea than justice is an elite idea as well. That is the case for certain section of our society but it shouldn't be.
Are corporates doing any good to the film industry?
Producers often run away, if you want to do something original. I must have met close to 30-40 producers, 99% didn't read the script and the one who did, I read out to him.
I think it's the one liner, synopsis and project-on-paper that's what they look at. Scripts are only for the creative team, producers are not interested in them.
I don't think corporatization is a healthy thing because corporates look at the bottom-line. More than corporatization I will hope for entrepreneurial thinking to come in the filmmaking, where people take risks, calculated risks. Corporates don't take risks, they minimize it, whereas entrepreneurs take risks. I believe it is possible to find other commercial elements beyond stars, dance floors and gangsters. Humour is a big thing, it's a hugely commercial thing in my opinion
Your seven years of wait is going to be over this Friday.
One of the good things about doing a "funny" film is that you can monitor audience response. You don't know how people liked a serious films unless the film gets over and you talk to them but in a "funny" film, you can tell simply by the noise they are making. I will go and see, and I hope people laugh. I would like to see people laugh at the film.
Any message to the people, whose original ideas are still waiting for producers, newcomers who want to make films?
Filmmaking is not rocket science, what you need is a shared vision. Like I said craft is just that, keep the viewer engrossed through the entirety of the duration. I think craft should not be something tangible, it enables the story and character to leap out to you.
