IFFK Diary-Day 1: Tomorrow Should be Better! story
Here in Trivandrum, IFFK seems to be everywhere, hoardings and banners near every big junction. 7000 delegates and many film professionals have turned up. So this small city hosts this huge festival of world cinema, Indian specials, Malayalam Cinema, documentaries, shorts, and retrospectives.
It all started today with Girl Cut in Two, Music Box, and Flower in the Pocket. Girl Cut in Two, a film by French director Claude Chabrol, is about a character called Gabrielle Deniege who is torn between an unattainable love and an available madman. The film was probably the most disappointing way IFFK could have started. Too verbal, monotonous visual volumes, and a narrow storyline are all that remain with the viewer. The hall was surprisingly packed.
In the afternoon, there was Jalsaghar by Satyajit Ray. Screened as a part of the '50 Years' program it saw very few viewers. One wonders. The print was quite bad and the projectionist's struggle was evident. This film, about an old Bengali zamindaar (landlord) driven to destruction due to his ego, has been called one of Ray's rare slightly flawed films. Though I do wonder which flaws critics talk about. If it is the rough edges then all I can say after seeing the 35 mm print at Sree theatre is; the rough edges lend realism to that sense of grandeur that Ray was attempting to portray. The film is probably his deepest work and has Ustad Vilayat Khan providing those fantastic Hindustani classical music pieces.
The evening saw the inauguration ceremony of the festival with the Chief Minister of Kerala and lots of other famous people under the colorful lights at Nisagandhi. Many were honored.
Tomorrow morning is Scorcese's Shine a Light. His documentary on the Rolling Stones. And the most important Alain Resnais retrospective. I am waiting.
