Hari Puttar: Tragedy of Errors! review
Yasser Usman reviews Hari Putter: Comedy of Terrors
First things first- "Hari Puttar : A Comedy of Terrors" is not 'inspired' by Harry Potter series, simply because it's a blatant copy of Hollywood blockbuster 'Home Alone'. And believe me- the only thought that comes into your mind after watching this film is to lock the directors of this film in a HOME ALONE and send audiences who were severely affected by this film to attack the HOME.
This film is produced by a publishing giant. They say in their write-ups that there is a scarcity of children's films...they also philosophize that children are more interested in mainstream masala films. But when they themselves make films for children, this is the kind of trash they come out with.
"Hari Puttar : A Comedy of Terrors" is colorless right from its first frame. This carbon copy of HOME ALONE has its settings in a Punjabi family. Hari Prasad (puttar Zain Khan) is left alone in a huge mansion with his cousin (Swini Khara). They are very happy doing things that they are not allowed to do when their parents are around. Then the villains enter the home. How they are thrashed, bruised and whipped by our Hari Puttar forms the core of the second half. They are just 'inspired' by Home Alone you see!!!!
The film is directed by Lucky Kohli and Rajesh Bajaj and though I tried to research about their previous work, I couldn't get to know about it. So considering this to be their first work, I can only say it's hugely disappointing. We are not against the idea of remaking Hollywood blockbusters. We know about the lack of innovative stories and decent writers in Bollywood. But when you have an excellent script like HOME ALONE (and its DVD also) ...please do not make a mess out of it. Please...please copy it properly.
The only positive point of "Hari Puttar : A Comedy of Terrors" is Zain Khan. He is first rate as the kid (though he doesn't look like a kid anymore) left alone. But even he couldn't save the film. Sarika is trying too hard to act like a Punjabi housewife- an act that falls flat. What is an actor called Jackie Shroff doing here? Saurabh Shukla and Vijay Raaz are completely wasted.
Though there are bad films releasing every week but this one is special because its comes hiding in the garb of the so-called 'wholesome entertainment' for children. Children... and their parents!!! Please stay miles away from this Hari Puttar...watch a dubbed version of Home Alone or even Harry Potter instead. Chill!!!

Very well written Yaseer.
Tragedy of errors indeed. So a "publishing giant" has produced this dud and a "leading newspaper" has given it 3.5 star rating! anyone willing to connect the dots?? These people are a disgrace to the family of film critics and even journalism.

"Hari Puttar" will probably provide the magic ingredient to the world to understanding the typical copy cat Indian Psyche ( I hate to mention this for Iam an Indian too). This will be haunt the Indian confidence and deal blows after blows to our image, and the worse is yet to come. There will be more companies and individuals who will be inspired by Hari Puttariqe style and like how USA (Ullasnagar Sindhi Association) mocked us for years, Hari Puttar will do to our current gen.
Its really sad that our Legal experts overlooked this perspective and went by the letter ignoring the spirit.

Hi Yasser. I entirely agree with you
Hi Yasser.
I entirely agree with you that the directors should have been put "Home Alone." Not only is this a copy of "Home Alone" and its not very well done either but it has so many flaws as well regarding England (United Kingdom) that those Indians living there will pick it up immediately. I can pick up two and mention it here. First one: The map that is shown when they go travelling in the train is completely wrong. Its shows Cheshire as a town, when in fact it is a county, a state, such as Gujarat and the movement of the train is showing moving north, through the twon of "Lancaster", which is in the Northwest of England and the county of Cheshire is in the west of London. Secondly, the house that is being shown is a mansion and is in the countryside and this means that it is a coutryside house due to its size. Its obvious that this is not located in a city as all the roads that are shown are countryside roads.
After watching the film, I tried to research and see who the directors were but was not able to find their names on the credit listings. I wonder if they have been locked away by the Producers?
Maybe the film makers should retitle
Maybe the film makers should retitle this movie as "Hari Puttar and errors of copying."
