Golmaal...no returns! review
The second part of the rib tickler Golmaal is back with a bang that freezes midway!
Talk about the first shots that take you through the Golmaal Returns, it shows snippets from the first part. It gives you great expectations about the second "returns" too. However, the movie takes you with a great connect of relationships, that of Gopal (Ajay Devgan), his sister Esha (Amrita Arora) and his wife Ekta (Kareena Kapoor) her brother Lucky (Tushar Kapoor). The movie begins with a scene showing Gopal on a beach with his wife celebrating their marriage anniversary. Here, Ekta portrays with annoying disgust (in the part of the audience) her love for "K" serials. After this scene, the movie holds some grave semantic pitfalls like Gopal's fake tattoo going on the logically wrong side of the lady he saves from drowning.
Also, the film introduces many of its characters during exposition of which some are introduced very late. For instance, the character of Laxman (Shreyas Talpade) could have been done with some tact by being introduced before. The entire movie revolves around the folly of the so called stud Gopal saving a short skirt, tight shirt clad Meera (Celina Jaitely). They spend a night together (in decent terms though, in a friends yacht). The mistake that the director makes here is to clad Meera in a dress that isn't half as typical of her in the film. The rest of the film, she is shown in oversized kurtas and sarees that reveal more than the dress did !
The second part looses its flavor and charm midway, although there are engrossing scenes like Lucky being introduced to his love interest Anjana Sukhani (a name you would not mind forgetting) in the movie, and the declaration where she says that she needs to read the "lip movements" because she is deaf.
Ekta's character matches that of Lara Dutta's in the blockbuster No Entry. However, this gorgeous babe is not half as effortlessly significant as Lara. Esha and Ekta have some scenes which are totally worthless, in the sense that it is a disaster when both of them come together. The scene where the three men go to "search" the lady he spent the night with, has no track to fall back on at all.
Golmaal Returns has some unmemorable songs like the one in which Gopal and Meera are shown dancing on the yacht, two minutes completely wasted. A size zero wife of Gopal does not sound trusting enough about him spending a night elsewhere. A bizarre script was actually the primary ingredient that worked for the first part of this movie. However, many scenes of the second fall flat on your face. For instance, Gopal not returning home for one night calls for characters associated to him wearing white clothes and mourning! The script has some grave pitfalls that do not hold the script tightly.
Also, Laxman in his "offer letter chaahiye" act does not manage to create as much of a stir. The comedy is fickle in taste and offers less variety. Surprisingly, Madhav (Arshad Warsi) who is a good actor hasn't a meaty role in this flick. He romances Esha, and the girl needs some serious training for her acting skills. Madhav's screen presence is very evident with his perfect comic timing and knack for delivering scenes with a smooth energy and zeal.
Munni, (Ashwini Kalsekar) the "I-likes-you" dig made at Saawariya, wouldn't have many people remembering her in the first place. The dig of the Munna although did work sparks for this movie. The director does have a knack for Munnabhai MBBS (and seems and avid follower of movies...which shows you perhaps why the script was made a mess of!) The last scene of the movie has a "mad" ending and does manage to keep you entertained for quite sometime.
Golmaal Returns, on the whole, is a good watch this season, only if you can gear yourself up for some cheap thrilling scenes, a disconnected flick. There are hardly any songs, sorry to the roving eyeballs who wanted to see "Meoww...." during the film!
Returns, eh? Time to return home, folks!
