Ghajini's Worldview is Primitive, Pre-modern story
How can Ghajini be primitive when it talks about a character who suffers from Anterograde amnesia, a medico-scientific condition, that was discovered only recently.
And of all the things, pre-modern! just have a look at the headquarters of Air Voice company, that the protagonist Sanjay Singhania owns. An imposing glass and steel structure, that's part contemporary, part futuristic.
Well, all this is just a garb, at the heart, Ghajini is a plain and simple village lore. A god king, who disguises himself as an ordinary subject and roams around in his kingdom and falls for a village belle. But there is a demon king, the villain, who kills the hero's beloved. Hero is burning with the fire of vengeance, however, he suffers from an ailment. And finally he overcomes his handicap and kills the demon king and lives happily ever after.
You could say, isn't genre drama all about a hero, a goal, a hindrance and hero's victory over it in order to achieve his goal. Ghajini is as good as any other drama that follows the genre traditions.
My argument is Ghajini looks primitive and pre modern because lack of characterization. The characters of the film aren't to be found anywhere in the contemporary world, at least in the roles, the film depict them in. I'm not against the idea that it could be intentional on the part of the filmmakers. However, the film creates an interesting effect because of its implausibilities: the characters though, they're made to look real in appearance, yet they remain a notch above reality.
Look at the chairman of the cellphone company, which aims to sell 50 Cr. Cellphones. Chairman of such a large enterprise goes himself spot hunting for his bill boards. His company has no marketing team, no external agency to support such an exercise.
Later, the company discovers that the girl whose flat they've spotted for installing a billboard, doesn't' t own the flat. As if had she been the owner, she could have been in a position to allow a hoarding? The world the film portrays, has no housing societies, no civic authorities.
And once he finds a possible spot, he orders his Personal Assistant to find the girl, and they barge into a shooting studio, where she's busy modeling! The P.A. conveys his chairman's humble request to allow them to put up a hoarding atop her flat! Does this look plausible in the contemporary world?
This chairman roams around with a cavalcade. With an army of personal assistants!
In a dance number, the assistants even salute the chairman!
Despite, his illness the chairman continues to hold the post and run his business. The people around him are his loyal servants. The way an 8 year old prince could rule an empire, similarly a mentally ill chairman can run a successful business empire, simple!
It's always man versus man (no sexism intended!). The fight for justice means a physical combat between a hero and a villain. Police means one officer, and once he gets killed, the investigation comes to an end. Business enterprise means an owner, who can give always things at his free will, there is no concepts of boards, roles, decision making processes. For a smaller instance like permission for a setting up a hoarding atop a flat means--a negotiation between the flat owner and the CEO, nobody is required in-between.
I've already written in detail about the demon king Ghajini, who incarnates as the villain in the film. He is plain and simple diabolic, from his very first appearance, and he gets his hands dirty with all sorts of collateral and moral offenses.
The story of Ghajini takes place in a society, where there is no concept such as law or justice. Villain Ghajini, kills people in the public places such as hospitals, however, let alone prosecution, there isn't a single hint of suspicion being raised against him.
The same applies to the hero. In the final combat he killed not less than 20 people apart from killing the villain gruesomely. However, he continues to live a benevolent life amidst kids in an orphanages set up in the memory of his beloved village belle. No signs, suggestions of any legal proceedings.
Interestingly, police, that can be visibly associated with law and justice, has been largely kept away from the proceedings of the film. In the first part of the film, there is a gruesome killing. Hero commits it, the victim is an aide of the villain. This is the first time where we get hints of police force's existence. However, as the film proceeds, the force gives way to an officer, who later gets killed in an accident. And with his demise police investigation also comes to an end. There are no concepts such as fingerprinting, forensic evidence etc. No police team to either investigate the murder of the officer or continue the investigation, it's one man's world. Always man vs. man!
The second encounter with the police happens when the hero barges into a girls hostel to kill a medical student, who helps the villain. In this case hero is arrested. Though, he visibly attempts to kill the girl, but he is discharged without even registering an F.I.R, because he's the chairman of a large company plus he is a patient! Reasons are plain and simple in the film, which require no further questioning. Justice is instant, decisions are rocket fast.
The hero, Anterograde amnesia patient, goes killing people. Such a forgetful person, who drops his bus ticket in the very first instance, is never pointed fingers at nor tried. So, is the case with the villain.
There are many such interesting facets to the film. If I go on, it'll be never ending.
No, I'm not nitpicking. Neither am I looking for goofups or logical flaws of the film.
All I'm trying to say is that the film is structured on a very sound hero-villain logic. The all mighty hero king, and a complete devil villain.
I just wonder how the film would have looked had the filmmakers left the original village lore unadulterated! Since filmmakers probably wanted us to associate with the film by situating in a contemporary world, it makes the film all the more interesting watch!

I am extremely surprised that I actually enjoyed Ghajini. Maybe the bad review got my expectations really low. Or maybe if Ghajini was meant to entertain it did serve its goal well:-) i agree there are thousands of loopholes one could poke in the story but somehow they became insignificant in the whole scheme of things. I do agree all the points you have mentioned are glaring mishaps in the script but till the movie is able to make me smile and cry i feel i have got my money's worth.

Bikas I would say that to some extent the Box office figures indicate as to how successful a movie is but it doesn't necessarily mean that it is in indication that the film is successful for the reason being is that many may not like it and yet there may be some who like it purely because of the stars in it. And so thats why Box Office records are indication on that level as well. But the figure that I have seen today for this film, which are said to be based on world wide basis, I would say that they are a bit exaggerated as there's no solid confirmation of this as yet. Also, I have heard that "Rab Ne Bana Di..." is still going strong in its third week.

@Anirban: your notes make me think. Films are as much cultural products as they are commercial. Does commercial success necessarily mean that "audience" has approved of a film? Do directors pull the strings (at least in Bollywood?) or pull people to theatres? Had Ghaini met the same fate, had another star played the lead role? What is that thing about a film, that creates mass hysteria around it?

Hmmmm... don't want about review. But, criticism of a movie is always taking it as a cultural text. So, basically any criticism is a way of researching a bit on these vital questions --
(1) Why is a movie selling, and how can we predict (statistically of course) when the audience is ready to 'devour' it?
(2) Is there a pattern for the sale, and how entertainment is connected to the bigger aspects of life -- earning, family-life and leisure?
(3) Can we make a formula for the sale? Can we change the audience mindset subtly, for some vested interest (fundamentalism or jingoism, for example)?
(4) Can we make the spectator a puppet of our hands (ie, the filmmakers') when s/he is in the theatre watching the things and feeling that s/he herself/himself is creating the movie?
Lots such questions are raised and tried to be answered in different types of criticism. Media Studies as an academic discipline might have started lately in the American and the French universities, but filmschools always taught them in one form or another. And masala filmmakers either consciously, or by repetition of greater masala filmmakers, did their own media studies. They still do.
This is why talking about such 'bad' movies is so very important.
