Coming of age - A Musical Memoir story
I was in pre-nursery when my mother would pick me up from my school and board a chartered bus. Several aunties and uncles would want to ruffle my hair and I would coyly oblige. But even though I was often caught looking outside the window humming some tune, I would never ever agree to sing for anyone and thank God, my mother never pushed me to prove my singing prowess to anyone.
Thank God also for the fact that my choice of bad songs did not get exposed at that early age. However, I know many would have forgiven me for the songs that I liked at that age - "Papa ko Mummy Se, Mummy Ko Papa se Pyaar hai, pyaar hai" or "Mard Taangewala, main hoon mard taangewala" because I am told I had the cutest cheeks to compensate for that stupidity.It wasn't my fault, late 80s was a bad time for Indian film music and born in 79, I missed the beautiful 70s. I would grow up to like worse songs like "Mera Naam Salma, Salma, Salma, Allah Jaane Kaun Banega Is Salma Ka Balma" and "Gore Rang Pe Na Itna Gumaan Kar, Gora Rang Do Din Mein Dhal Jaayega".
Then one beautiful evening I met this girl who happened to ask me which was my favorite song. Though I had heard enough songs, I knew none of the above listed song could speak highly of my taste. So, after raking my brain for a good 10-15 minutes, I came up with a often listed song "Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas Tum Rehti Ho". My friend wasn't impressed. She looked at me pensively and said "You need to listen to a lot more music", and with that on my birthday I was flooded with "Tumhe ho na ho, mujh ko to itna yakeen hai", "Dil dhoondhata hai, phir wahi fursat ke raat din", "Ae zindagi gale laga le", "Meri Jaan, mujhe Jaan Na Kaho".
Honestly, my initial reaction to all the songs above was rather subdued. I was in class 9 and there were hotter songs doing the rounds those days like "Tu cheez badi hai mast mast", "Raja ko raani se pyaar ho gaya" and obviously the new song arrangement appealed to me much more than Illayraja, R.D, S.D, Madan Mohan.
But to my credit, I soon understood what a good composition is, what crescendo is, what arrangement can do to a song and what a melody is. By the time I reached college, I had acquired a fine taste in music, but I lost my friend. No, she didn't die, she decided to discontinue with our friendship because she found me to be exceedingly fickle minded with regard to relationships.
This ficklemindedness turned me into a seeker of music which was soulful, which had sad, sensuous sub-texts and this led me to my ultimate find - Madan Mohan. Â Madan Mohan is not under rated but surely is not as popular in today's youngsters as perhaps an R.D Burman. But on serious scrutiny of the music of the two directors, I realised Madan Mohan created more complex tunes, but Rahul created exciting arrangements. Not taking away anything from R.D (besides who am I to comment on his work), purely on basis of preference I really think Madan Mohan could create melody like no one could. Â S.D Burman's music was soulful too, but perhaps classical basis can make the grammer of a song sound too careful and thus strong, but a song like "Tum jo mil gaye ho" or "Lag Ja Gale, ke phir ye hansi raat ho na ho" with its delicate, lilting, carefree tune, makes it sound romantic as well as terribly flirtatious.
I have been listening to all kinds of composers since my friend opened my ears to her repertoire. I like music that current generation of music directors compose. I think Rehman gave some astounding music in Zubeida which is not as popular as Hum Se Hai Muqabla, Bombay...I really like MM Kreem, hear him in Zakhm...or even Shankar Ehsaan Loy, their songs make chartbusters, but somehow while the new music directors are technically more sound, some can create hits by the time they flick their bangs on forehead, some dip into their regional hits and put in a bit of new arrangement and voila before the regionalists could create any noise that rehashed song is a hit...somehow when it comes to one simple tune that would sound like "Phir wohi shaam, wahi gam, wahi tanhaai hai", I find myself reaching out to Madan Mohan...incidentally Krishna is celebrated as Madan Mohan, who mesmerises everyone...some people just live upto their name...and beyond

Have you seen "Veer - Zaara." The songs in that film were composed many years back when Madan Mohan was alive. However, since these were not released at the the time, one of his relatives allowed Yash Chopra to use it in this film. Incidently, while researching on a article on "History of Bollywood," I have come across an interesting piece of information and that is that the late Madan Mohan was the son of the legendary singer K.L. Saigal. I know that this may be going a bit too far and beyond your and my time but I found that piece of information very interesting.
You mentioned R.D. Burman. If you here to the music and the songs of the movie, "1942 - A Lovestory," you will notice that the songs are based on the music from that era. Off course being son of S.D. Burman, Rahul Dev Burman had this ability and was natural when composing and being involved in the industry for such a long time. I think its a shame that for many years, until he recorded the music and songs for "1942 - A Lovestory," many within the industry had forgotten him and unfortunately, he passed away befor the movie was released and was not able to see how much it was appreciated and loved by his fans and those who adored and loved listening to his compositions.
