Cannes'09:Palme d'Or to Michael Haneke news

Austrian director Michael Haneke claimed the coveted Palme d'or at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival for his "The White Ribbon".

This is the first Golden Palm for the director whose earlier films Cache (2005), Pianist (2001), Funny Games (1997) and Code Unknown (2000) had been nominated for the honour.

Indian actress Sharmila Tagore was also part of the jury headed by French actor Isabelle Huppert.

Haneke's film is set in the year before the First World War broke out, and in a remote Austrian, Protestant village. The film draws you in with great storytelling aided by brilliant acting by all of the cast, including a bunch of youngsters. Quite surely, the Cannes Competition results could throw up some real surprise this time. And Cannes is known to surprise many.
