Bollywood Releases to Look forward to (Pun intended)

Yasser Usman ponders over the Bollywood releases lined up for the coming weeks

mehbooba.jpgLast week in Bollywood was the ideal week. Two much-awaited films ( Jane Tu..and Love Story 2050) were releasing and the rivalries between their makers were the talk of the town. It is more or less clear by now that who won the box office battle. So lets move on to this week…not one, not two but three films are releasing, (but only one got released) each one different from the other in subject and mood. But I am confused; I really don’t know which film to watch because each film looks worse then the other. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

MEHBOOBA- Its difficult to decide whether the title of the film is more worn-out or the film. Afzal Khan’s multistarrer, big budget Mehbooba is in the making since 1999.In these nine years, everything in Bollywood has changed. The kind of films that are being made, the technical finesse, the experimental storylines, and above all the multiplex culture.

MEHBOOBA is the story of two BOYS - Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan (Stop laughing!!!) wooing a GIRL- Manisha Koirala (I said stop laughing!!!), but there is a twist in the story (You guys are still laughing!!!). Ok…Ok so do you don’t really wanna know the story. Anyways, the lyrics are by Late Anand Bakhshi ( ya!!!he wrote them looooong ago ) and music by Ismail Darbar which sounds straight out of a 70’s film. Why the hell are they releasing this film?
But the big question is whether the film made for the audiences belonging to 1999 would be able to leave any kind of impact on the changed audiences of 2008.
Let’s hope for Afzal Khan’s sake that the film at least do well at the small centers, it’s his DREAM PROJECT after all.

Well, looking at the unimpressive storyline and the jaded promos of the film, it seems no one is interested in the film…not even the actors.

GOOD LUCK…the Kissing Saga - The other film releasing is GOOD LUCK. It stars Superstars like Aryeman Ramsey (Remember the brooding J actor who debuted again Big B in a forgettable Raj Kumar Santoshi flick Family) and Sayali Bhagat (who is she?). The film has got an interesting storyline though. It is about Saba (Sayali Bhagat) who has the good luck charm sealed in her kiss. One day Saba kisses Aryeman and her good luck is transferred to him. Success starts deserting Saba and Aryeman starts fulfilling all his wishes with the good luck charm. An astrologer tells Saba that if she kisses the hero again, she will get back her good luck charm. So the film is about getting the good luck charm back. In this pursuit, everyone kisses everyone in the movie giving rise to some hilarious situations. But I really don’t know if the audiences will kiss this film and transfer some good luck charm at the Box Office… Good Luck Aryeman.

MUKHBIR- This stars another Superstar Samir Dattani (What? Never heard about him!!!Go brush up your Bollywood Gyan J ). The most weird thing about this film is not its star cast, not its storyline, not its music, not its…leave it. Actually it’s the promotion strategy (if you can call it that!!!). The producer of the film ‘Mukhbir’ has come up with an insane promotional MONEY-BACK offer- If you don’t like the movie, get your money back. This is plainly stupid, overboard and very cheap way of promoting cinema. The makers should understand that thay are not selling hair oil or pain relieving balm in passenger trains…”pasand na aaye to paisa wapas”. Come on! who are we kidding!!!

Mukhbir is directed by Mani Shanker who has earlier directed gems like 16 December, Rudraksh ( Some of my movie lover friends were in coma for a month after watching it) and Tango Charlie (yes it’s the name of a film J). So we all know what to expect from MUKHBIR which deals with the life of a Police Informer.

So, what to do? Which film to watch? Are the filmmakers do not really have better story ideas? Or do they think the audiences are dumb enough to watch such films? It’s a criminal waste of money, time, energy, resources and above all talent and that too in the name of art…in the name of cinema. I suggest, go for the last week release Jane Tu Ya Jane Na…which any day is better than the 3 new releases…

God Save Bollywood !!!! phew…

P.S : Only Mehbooba got released this week.
