Black and White (2008)
What was Subhash Ghai thinking while making this film? Did he want to oblige FTII, the institute he many years back passed out from. He has often put the institute to shame with films like Yaadein and Kisna but Black and White…ya khuda is disgrace.

Anurag Sinha, a pass out from FTII… poor boy is not a bad actor at all but it may not always be a great idea to start your career with a banner with a name…ask Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. But why blame poor Anurag, the story was not bad at all. A jihadi takes shelter at a Hindu Professor’s house and we all know what happens next. If I as a viewer can believe this story has potential why wouldn’t a newcomer believe the same?

But Subhash Ghai is such a let down. His treatment is not amateurish, its just bad, bad and very bad. His insane jihadi shoots anyone, anywhere. The man is on a mission to blow up Lal Quila, Delhi’s pride and not once but atleast five times he manages to dupe security and go there to draw some shoddy sketches of the same. Why was his body language so loud and brash? Doesn’t Subhash Ghai read newspapers where all these terrorists are known to be suave, quiet people with unnoticeable body language. This jihadi whenever talks, talks like one, behaves like one…and this is not the only problem.

There is a very loud Shefali Shah who works perhaps for an NGO, an Urdu Professor Anil Kapoor who is a hindu. People are only hindu or muslim in the film and yet all the film wants to say is it doesn’t matter whether you are a hindu or muslim all you want is peace and yet this subtle message doesn’t come across even in one frame.

You want to die in your chair for mistrusting your judgement about Subhash Ghai’s directorial skills. You want to shoot yourself for not believing the critics who warned you enough to not watch the movie.

I pity Anil kapoor who is trying to give his best to a shoddy movie like this. No, Anil even your act could not save this mess. Anil’s role is in fact caricaturish in many places and therefore he doesn’t come across as someone who can be taken seriously for whatever he’s preaching.

And what happened to a seasoned man like Habib Tanveer. Why was he bluting out below average poetry in this film? Maybe he was just as naive as I was. You don’t want to spoil your day, you don’t want to waste your time and you surely have better things to do than watch this film. I am sulking still.

    1. The promos themselves are a letdown, I don’t why anyone would want to go at all to watch it…It seems too hypocritical a movie, and Anil Kapoor is looking too hypocritical an actor in the promos. The only thing that’s exciting there is the raw sensuality on the hero’s face, but guess his dialogue delivery and acting skills (as far as I could judge from the promos) still leave a lot to be desired.
By the way, I found Kisna a brilliant film, beautifully shot, you feel Alaknanda lapping you, and not bad acting by anyone, and a lovely romantic story. Yes, it was a bit overcooked as all Ghai films are (Isha Sherwani should never have been a part of that film, plus the tardy starting and ending of the film). It had its minuses, but it was a much better Hindi film than many…so beg to differ there

    2. Mr Subhash ghai should take a break. After venturing into His kind of cinema, when he made a move towards serious cinema, he forgot that it needs a lot of effort and craftsmanship. This film is a debacle, proving the fact that the viewers here are seasoned now to accept quality cinema.

    3. its interesting the way you wrote the article…it clearly shows the small world you have forced yourself to live in..but it aint bad till you feel happy in it…now you must be wondering what am i getting at..sorry for that …i tend to have lkng towards prologues it kinda draws you in and start building your own jukebox..as from what you said ..i love the whole review ..its very neat and clear ..except the first paragraph..which is quite disturbing…the way you say how ghai is spoiling ftii name and intellectual elite bollock you prentend to carry with you..i presume you are from ftii ..even if not ..i presume there are zillion heroic characters from there who are doing work which is much nea crap..so instead of shouting first think what you saying(which obviously you cant) but again that aint a big problem maybe read some reviews before writing one…dont worry i am not here to lick ghai’s ass ..i hate his films as much as you do…but just be little constructive next time…and yes i love being cruel at times..so take it heart and give me a stronger dose of caffeine next time..(terrible with speelings..you seee!!) .. till then love you ….

    4. My dear friend,
I respect what you think about my review. I generally do not reply to comments because I generally feel people are entitled to their views but you made and then unmade a presumption about the college I have passed out from - no its not FTII. I am sorry for pointing this out but more than your voicing your views your langauge really put me off…first I was not shouting…I was writing…two, your not liking my review would not have been necessarily assumed by me to amout ghai’s ass licking (don’t you think this word on a public platform sounds profane?)…three, being constructive, creative and appealing are not same things…so my review may not have appealed to you but it does not in anyway show that I am not constructive and bereft of creativity. Thanks for writing in anyway.
