BAFTA Foreign Category Nominations Annouced, Jodha Akbar Missing! news
Quite contrary to popular Indian expectations, more so generated by media reports, Jodha Akbar didn't get a BAFTA nomination in the foreign film category.
British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)Â has announced the nomination list for the best non English films. Following films got the nominations-
The Baader Meinhof Complex
Gomorrah
I've Loved You So Long
Persepolis
Waltz with Bashir
All other nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards in 2009 will be announced on 15 January. The winners will be announced during the Film Awards ceremony on Sunday 8 February at the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.
According to BAFTA "This early announcement of the nominations allows the members a longer period to view the five films in contention and gives a greater profile to this year's foreign language films. The membership at large will vote to decide the winner, to be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 8 February 2009."
Finola Dwyer, Chair of BAFTA's Film Committee, said "We are delighted to announce the contenders for this award today. This voting chapter has doubled in size since last year, reflecting the huge enthusiasm for world cinema amongst the BAFTA members".
Strangely, Indian media had reported last month that Jodha Akbar has got the nomination in the foreign film category quoting a news agency. Apparently producers of the film had issued a press release announcing their nomination, even before first round of voting was over.

Interesting that 2 of these should be animated films. What are live action people doing? Getting lost in more special effects and zany cinematography angles? Grappling with mise-en-scene while forgetting the narrative?
