Bachna Ae Haseeno: The Mixer-Grinder Effect! (lessness) review
Yasser Usman reviews Siddharth Anand's Bachna Ae Haseeno
They got a large mixer cum grinder and filled it with the following ingredients-
DVD's of Dev Anand's superhit "Teen Deviyan" and their very own DDLJ, Audio CDs of "Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi", "Dhoom" and "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom". Mixed it for few months in the 'mixer cum grinder' and then took the printout of the resultant product. What came out became the script called "Bachna Ae Haseeno". 'They' stands for Yashraj Films and it's a pity that the prime movie production house of our country that has the biggest budgets and technicians and even country's biggest superstars just a phone call away, doesn't have a decent script. They are so short of story ideas that they have stooped down to taking titles of old hit songs and stretch them to 3 hr long movies. No point in discussing Yash Raj, lets talk about Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Bachna Ae Haseeno tells the story of Raj (Ranbir Kapoor), a Casanova. Raj breaks the heart of two girls (Minissha and Bipasha) who are madly in love with him. He only realizes the pain when the third girl ( Deepika Padukone) ditches him. Raj is so devastated by the breakup that he goes back to his two ex-girlfriends to apologise and make amends.
The story is uni-dimensional and so are the characters. They do not have any logic behind their thinking. They think in a particular way during the first half of the film and diametrically opposite during the other half. But do we expect logic from any Yashraj flick these days Just Forget it guys!!!
Bachna Ae Haseeno has its strong points too. It does what Bhansali's Saawaria failed to do. Bachna Ae Haseeno proves that Ranbir Kapoor is here to stay and rule. Ranbir slides into the role of Raj, so effortlessly that one never feels he is just one-film old. And if the claps and whistles of the female fans in the theatre are anything to go by, this independence day a new star is born.
Out of the teen deviyan- Bipasha Basu wins the race hands down. The maturity, the expressions, the oomph factor, the 'hotness' quotient...Bips just sizzles. Infact, the chemistry between Ranbir and Bipasha is better than that between the real life couple Ranbir-Deepika.
Deepika is wonderful in the role of an over-ambitious independent Sydney-based cabdriver, who effortlessly juggles business school classes with her jobs. Out of the three girls, hers is the character who clearly knows her mind.
Minisha Lamba plays the character that is very similar to DDLJ's Kajol and though Minisha is not at par with Kajol in terms of acting abilities, she looks lovely and fresh.
TV actor Hiten Paintal as Ranbir's buddy acts well. Hiten is actor Paintal's son and this pairing reminds you of the wonderful pairing of Rishi Kapoor and Paintal in films like Rafoochakkar.
Director Siddharth Anand seems so engrossed by the title track that he plays it all the time in the movie. The film flows well in the first half but suddenly turns overly melodramatic and emotional in the second half. It looks as if the director got confused about the genre of the film, he seems puzzled that whether he is making a romantic comedy or a serious family film about relationships.
The film's strongest point is the dialogues by Anvita Dutt Guptan. The one-liners gel effectively with the modern characters but the stretched and unrealistic second half leaves even her confused. Still a decent job.
Vishal-Shekhar's music has nothing new to offer except the gimmick of taking Kishor Kumar's son Sumit to sing the title track and mixing it with the original Kishore Da's song. And wow!!! Kishore Da's voice still sparkles...the gimmick has worked well for the audio sales but apart from this song the music is just timepass.
Like all Yash Raj flics, the cinematography is superb and the awesome locales of Australia and Italy have been beautifully captured.
So, watch Bachna Ae Haseeno for Ranbir Kapoor's inspired performance and ofcourse the teen d eviyan. But the movie could have been better...O Jesus!! Please send some better writers...

guys, don't watch this film called
guys, don't watch this film called 'bachna ae haseeno...if you intend to watch...its a horrible and mindless movie. u can watch it if you want only for ranbir's good performance and thats only the first half....Mr. yasser has appeciated the cinematography of this film..i really wonder that from which point he liked the the cinematography. i found it completely flat and without any soul in it. if this kind of cinematography is going to be appreciated i seriously have the doubts that technically we are moving nowhere...pick up any movie from europe, south korea, hong kong, china and hollywood u will find the the good contrast with gloss if required...in ' bachna ae haseeno' where is the contrast by the way...all the actors' face is looking like plastic there is no depth at all...in cinema u will always find the concept of time and space...bt where is the concept of time in this flick...night is looking day and day God knows looking what?....the dominance of yellow is so much that all actors' face is looking painted by yellow colour either it is day, night or its in australia, india or italy.....one more thing i had read somewhere that fill light is meant to fill the shadow created by source or key light. In this movie fill light is almost as strong as the source or the key light. i also know that in cinema artistic liberty while incorporating gloss with realism is being taken normally, but in 'bachna ae haseeno' this liberty is so strong that it completely has taken over the reality.
This kind of mediocre and 'diwali chap' work is being appreciated in india no wonder we are far far behind from small countries like hong kong and south korea forget about hollywood thats unreachable dream...
i m also surprised that 'nikhat kazmi' (big film critic) gave 4 star to such kind of trash,i guess she probably meant by giving 4 star only the 4 stars of the movie( ranbir, depika, bipasha and minisha) ....
I enjoyed this film and at least it was
I enjoyed this film and at least it was better then "Singh Is Kinng" as it had some sort of story that could be understandable.
I have been to Switzerland many times and have enjoyed the scenery, which I was glad to see in this film. I have also travelled by train in Switzerland and must say that it was a most enjoyable experience almost like the way shown in the movie. One has to visit the country to appreciate such scenery - I feel.
Ranbir has definitely come out of the shadows of "Saawariya" and proved that he is here to stay and that, just like the other Kapoors, he has acting in his blood. But unfortunately, the same can't be said for Deepika as she seems to have stayed in the same frame that she did in the second half of "Om Shanti Om" and seemed to be remaining there. While with Bipasha, she has proved, again that she is very talented besides looking gorgeous. Finally, Minisha also performed her part well.
A good movie from Yash Raj and indeed from the industry.
I think that deepika should realise
I think that deepika should realise that she is where she is because of the one film that did very well and that was last year and not this year.
Love tat movie..totally time pass
