Picking your favorite films is like the predicament a child faces when he or she is asked "who do you love more, mummy or papa?" It's a choice you hardly ever can make, or should make, yet people are unrelenting in the pursuit of that answer. Anyway getting down to movies‘¦ I think the hardest part is what film do you leave out from your list‘¦ there are so many that have made a deep impact on your consciousness, yet for want of space you can't include in the list. Yet I guess the films I've left out, will eventually find themselves in the lists of others. So when Bikas compiles the list of DearCinema's favourite 100 films each classic will get the recognition it richly deserves. So here goes‘¦
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro
I remember first catching a glimpse of the Mahabharata sequence from the film on Doordarshan (India's national broadcaster) on returning home from school one afternoon. And I was hooked for life‘¦ I have revisited this film several times subsequently and it has raised my spirits every time. And its not just a laugh riot‘¦ its really layered‘¦ I don't think a better satire has been made in India and the characters are so well sketched out they will remain etched in memory and always make you smile.
Cinema Paradiso
A filmmaker's love affair with cinema is hardly the subject that would make a film popular‘¦ but when you blend it with childhood memory you end up with a powerful "coming of age" film that almost everybody can relate to. The little boy's friendship with his mentor, the theatre projectionist is touching, the music will make you cry and the simplicity of life in the little Italian village is reminiscent of neo realist cinema from many decades back
Amores Perros
As hard hitting and gory as it can get, this film has a rhythm that is mesmerizing‘¦ almost poetic. The film got Mexican director, Alejandro González Iñárritu as well as leading man, Gael GarcÃa Bernal, international stardom. While the film has a raw, edgy feel to it, director Inarritu has used many sophisticated and innovative cinematic styles to carry his story forward. Three stories running parallel and seemingly unrelated, suddenly come together and the realisation that all three stories were spawned by one life changing incident was a bolt from the blue for me when I saw it for the first time. Ofcourse the style has been subsequently used by Inarritu himself in his films "21 Grams" and "Babel" and by guys like Mani Ratnam in Yuva, so it may seem a little jaded now. Yet cinema has much to thank Inarritu for his addition to the cinematic lexicon.
Singing in the Rain
The film is considered by most as the finest musical ever made. Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds make perhaps the most memorable trio in cinema history, the singing and dancing will keep you thoroughly entertained, the dialogues are smart and very funny and if you've been following Hollywood of that era you will notice there are irreverent and very witty references to the film industry laced throughout the film. Brilliant stuff‘¦
Psycho
Well I guess no list of favourite movies is complete without a thriller and Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is as good as it gets. The setting of the film - a gloomy vacant motel with its reclusive owner and the haunting soundtrack, builds up a sense of foreboding for the viewer. When a beautiful young woman who is on the run after stealing forty thousand dollars from her employer checks into a motel for the night, little does she realise she is in for a fate more scary than arrest by the cops. The shower scene is easily one the most memorable and talked about scenes in cinema history and the climax is so terrifying I literally jumped out of my chair, shrieking, when I first saw it. And most people in the theatre did likewise.
