Aaja Nachle: Celebrating Feminism and Art review
Critics have come down hard on the film...Most saying that its vague. But how can the celebration of something as intriguing as a woman not be vague? Her art...her whims...her fancies...her stubborn-ness..her victory and her defeat...How can something so complex not be a little vague? asks Pranshu SikkaÂ
What is most disappointing about this film are perhaps its reviews! A celebration of feminism and art...turned down by critics and Masands because it does not live up to the notion of a classic bollywood film. The movie revolves around the comeback woman Madhuri and the celebration of feminism and art which is integral to her character in the film.
A 30 odd year divorcee single mother comes back to her old village to find the only symbol of art- The Ajanta, being brought down to further propogate jungle of concrete. She is moved coz Ajanta defines her existence- from the art she learnt to the bread she earns..Ajanta even gave her the man she eloped with to West and who deserted her later. She stands up for and by Ajanta... to fight for its existence and through it her own. She brings together the villagers of "Shaamli" and encourages them to fight for the monument, once famous for rejuvenating villagers by entertaining them.
The finale is gripping..I mean which Romeo-Juliet sequence in these times can keep one interested for 20 odd minutes. But the lovely use of color and blend of theatre and screenplay keeps the audience glued to their seats.

Now wasn't Sarkar vague? But sadly it was about a man...a celebration of his stoic manliness...and not the zealous stubborn-ness of a woman; And thus recieved well by critics.
No denying though that the film is a little weak on dialogues and pace especially in the first half...But a progressive film auguring well for the future of cinema.

what a refreshing review.
i strongly agree that Madhuri's comeback character Dia, is a well-crafted one and that she does an effortless job at portraying her with elan.
it seems to me that people have either become too discerning about their likes and dislikes or that they think it is stylish to criticise offhandedly.

i believe the film was gripping, in so far as the colours and sets and costumes are concerned. but all in all its actually anti-feminist. it leaves you with a belief that in our regressive community, till date only a stereotype of a "woman" is well accepted...(note anokhi's amazing makeover in quest to lure her lover). So beautiful yes...but "Progressive" no!
 i loved this
