Anirban Lahiri can't wait for 7th Third Eye Asian Film Festival to Open
Tonight the 7th edition of the Third Eye Asian Film Festival is going to start. After the respective awards are given to Korean Director Park Kwang- su and pioneer film archivist P K Nair, the opening film for the festival will be screened. This year the festival opens with a Chinese film, Tuya's Marriage. The latest masterpiece from the Golden Bear winning filmmaker Wang Quan An, this film talks about modern day China, and a fine balance between the days of communist regime and the current global market.
Like its previous editions, Third Eye Asian Film Festival presents a panoply of different maestros' works under different categories. Under the Homage section, films by the Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, and three films scripted by Vijay Tendulkar (Manthan, Ardhastya and Umbartha) will be screened.
Israeli director Dan Wolman's six films and the new-age Korean director Kim-Ki-Duk's five films will be shown the film-maker in focus section. Under the retrospective section, Japanese director Keisuke Kinoshita's six films will be presented.
In the regular screenings, Spectrum Asia will showcase latest films from the last two years. They include Rammi (Babak Shirinsefat, Iran), Things we do when we fall in love (James Lee, Malaysia), Maimaiti's 2008 (Xierzhati. Yahefu, China), Brutus (Tara Ilernberger, Phillipines), Climates (Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey), Swift (Abai Kulbai, Kazakstan) etc.
In the Indian Vista section, audience will get a chance to watch latest films from the sub-continent from the past two years. There are ten films to be shown, in this section. They are Gulmohar (Gajendra Ahire); Gulabi Talkies (Girish Kasaravalli), Ma (Manju Borah), People Under Heaven (Anjan Das), Twister (Shivaji Patel); ADIEU, Behind The Screen (Arup Manna), R(evolution) (Mustafa Zaveri); Your Well Wisher (V Eswar Reddy); On the Wings of Birds (A N Prasanna); Achanak (Yogesh Soman).
There will be a special tribute to Satyajit Ray, under the Asian Master section. Seven films by Ray will be shown in this section. They include Pather Panchali, Aparijito, Charulata, Mahanagar, Aranyer Din Ratri, Seemabaddha and Agantuk. For many new filmmakers from the young generation this is going to be a rare chance of experiencing Ray-Subrata Mitra magic on the big screen.
The festival has two competition categories, like last year's. Eight films will compete in the Debutant Director category, while more than thirty films will be screened in the Short Film competition category.
The festival fever will be on for the next seven days. A special screening of Park Kwang-Su's film Single Spark will be the Centre Piece of the festival. On 23 October, the festival will close at Plaza Cinema, with the Sri Lankan director Somaratnee Dissanayake's latest film King Siri.
